Just that, what are people’s thoughts on the name Stephanie?

It’s a lovely name and definitely not a “mum” name 🤣 There are two in my daughter’s Reception class and another one in Brownies.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/10/2022 07:28

Nice name, due a comeback.
I considered it for dd (11) as we wanted a name that abbreviated to Annie.

RambamThankyouMam · 27/10/2022 07:41

I love it!

Yogagrandmum · 27/10/2022 07:52

Great name

Really!
where abouts are you?
Wasn't expecting it to be a name that featured more than once in a primary school classroom at the minute

@Woodywood living in the South East and it’s obviously popular in our little town! I think it’s making a comeback.

Woodywood · 27/10/2022 08:52

@Harebrain aw that’s so lovely. It’s strange how there are little regional pockets of names isn’t it.

I think it's a timeless name, I put it in same vein as Victoria or Joanna

Liorae · 02/12/2022 03:59

There is a difference between dated and classic.

caitlinrose · 02/12/2022 04:27

It's dated.

I like many dated names, by the way. Dated doesn't mean bad.

I like the full name. Stephanie is fun to say.

The nicknames are terrible, in my opinion. Stevie (or even Steve might happen) is by far the worst, I just think "stinky" (sorry, but it just immediately comes to mind) and the baby on "Family Guy" and elderly men. Steph and Stephie aren't nice to me either.

But Stephanie is pretty if you can somehow get people to say the full name always.

But I don't find it refreshing as she'll meet lots who are 30+ years older in the workplace, among her friends' mums etc. Children don't grow up in a bubble of people who are their own age and Stephanie is common in the population as a whole.

Heavylifting · 02/12/2022 04:53

Stephanie is a lovely classic name, is fits into the Felicity, Penelope, Audrey, vibe to me. Stephanie is also a very international name and is used in Germany (Steffi Graff), Spanish speaking countries and Italy.

Princess Grace of Monaco also used it for her daughter.

MadameMackenzie · 02/12/2022 05:19

Awful

Mercurial123 · 02/12/2022 05:38

It's outdated. There are so many beautiful names to chose.

soulinablackberrypie · 02/12/2022 09:48

I like it!

Also, although it is not particularly common at the moment, I don't think it is unusable because it was never very common. If it had been at-least-two-in-every-class common in the 70s or 80s, I would understand the claim that it is "dated." But it was never quite like that - I remember one in each of the two primary schools I went to, none at all in my very large secondary school, and a handful (of various ages, and not all of them British) in my entire adult life, so it isn't tied very closely to any one time period for me.

VejaVagVagina · 02/12/2022 09:59

Very 90's name, I know two Stephanie's very well. I've never been a fan of the name, but then I also don't like the male equivalent of Steven. Quite vanilla names

FayCarew · 02/12/2022 10:39

I dislike vanilla, so the use of the word to describe something dull confuses me.
I neither love nor hate marmite.

ImaMumtoaboy · 02/12/2022 10:45

My name is Stephanie. Born late 70s and have never met another Stephanie.

Ciri · 02/12/2022 10:50

It’s pretty and Steffi/Steffie is a pretty nickname

FearofQueefing · 07/12/2022 11:34

I don't think it's dated at all. I think it's quite classic.

Prefer Stevie to Steph in terms of nn...

Nancienoo · 07/12/2022 11:36

I used to go school with a Stephanie she stuffed her bra with loo roll on the day of holy communion 😵‍💫😂

fairycupcakes · 07/12/2022 21:10

I think it’s quite an unattractive cumbersome name unfortunately, just doesn’t have a nice sound at all - ste-fanny… much nicer names around. If you like the nn Stevie or Steffie I’d go for one of those as a full name. I know a couple of female Stevie’s (not short for anything) - I think it’s a great standalone name.

17caterpillars1mouse · 07/12/2022 21:15

It's nice and feels refreshing. The only thing that puts me off is the shortening Steph. Eurgh. I like Stevie as a NN though

Littleoxforddictionary · 07/12/2022 21:23

Stephanie is new in town

If you are pronouncing it Steph Fanny then you are pronouncing it wrong.

Stef fn knee

It isn't dated because it was never used enough to be dated. I have met/heard of all ages of Stephanie's. But not that many of them.

(And is it is used by middle aged men when they want to become a women/change gender/get their kicks the new biggest insult for a name someone can think of?!)

Most of what you’ve said isn’t relevant to my comment - I didn’t say it was dated or associated with middle age transgender persons… I simply don’t like the sound, it’s ugly. Perhaps that’s why it’s not often used 🤷🏼‍♀️
I say stef uh knee - stefknee is not the right pronunciation. Accents/dialect play a huge part - some accents you may hear the “fanny” sound more.
