Please don't call your child Dotty.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/10/2022 22:27

@EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn my grandma was called Dorothy, she hated being called Dotty. As you say it's an insult.

MuchTooTired · 25/10/2022 22:31

The only Dottie I knew was actually called Dorothy. It's a nickname, not a given name.

Dottie wren is describing a spotty bird though.

You sound very childish

Theskyisfallingdown · 26/10/2022 10:41

How? It’s factual. Dotty pattern, dotty dress, it’s a description word when placed before a word that’s an object. A wren is a bird.

Theskyisfallingdown · 26/10/2022 10:46

I don’t appreciate being called names for pointing out an obvious fact.

LeMoo · 26/10/2022 11:14

@Theskyisfallingdown no, that's a Jenny Wren

Dottie as a name is long established

Dotty as a word is different

It isn't an obvious fact though

Dassams · 26/10/2022 11:31

But dotty and dottie sound the same. An adjective meaning full of dots.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/10/2022 11:32

What @Theskyisfallingdown means is that when naming someone you should take into account that combining two commonly used words is going to sound like a sentence. Dottie is a nickname yes but it's also an adjective. In the same way that you wouldn't use something like Violet Rose or Sunny Joy perhaps its best avoiding using a noun as a middle name for a girl who will be nicknamed Dottie.

Bramblejoos · 26/10/2022 12:04

I've known a Dot (other than Cotton) over the years - I've never known a Dottie or Dotty and I'm 70

LeMoo · 26/10/2022 12:36

🙄

NKFell · 26/10/2022 12:38

I too would say a strong middle name.

I know a woman called Hattie who then chose to go by her middle name professionally.

@merrymelodies @ManefesationofConciousness don't be so bloody rude

I made a number of suggestions based on what come to mind

Dottie Doodah is a real name- its a well know phrase

Dassams · 26/10/2022 14:06

I don't blame her. Who would want be known as a little 🎩 hat?!

merrymelodies · 26/10/2022 14:09

Not rude, just kindly suggesting one of the (many) nicknames your daughter is likely to be called by her peers. Behind her back or to her face.

Everyone saying how lovely a name it is, are you not aware that it means crazy/loopy/batty?
You can’t do that to a child!
