Jasmine and Violet and Elana and Yasmine

Not on our list just yet but thinking about adding them.

I'm particularly fond of Violet but not so sure if I like Vi as a nickname. Is it too common?

Jasmine is so pretty written down but I sometimes wonder whether it's too harsh. I read it here the other day and mentioned it to my husband who likes it. It sort of fits his love for 90s names and my love for nature names but sometimes I find it too modern and would rather choose something like Violet which is also more classic.

Elana is a name I noticed in a book I was reading. In my head I say it like eh-LAH-na. I was wondering what you thought of it.

Yasmine is another one I am fond of.

Please comment on:

Violet
Jasmine
Yasmine
Elana

Violet - I wanted to call DD this but DH said no. I would have used the nn Lettie
Jasmine - a nice name and don't get too many. In fact I've only ever met two and they are both adults. I don't see it as particularly modern or dated
Yasmine - not keen on this, much prefer Jasmine
Elana - I like it and I would pronounce the same way as you but I did have to think about how I'd pronounce it! So might come across some pronunciation issues like eh - LAY - na or EE - lah - na

Jasmine is my favourite by a mile. Don’t like Yasmin as much. Violet is ok but getting very popular. I think Elana would have a lifetime of correcting people who spelled/pronounced it incorrectly.

Dreamingcats · 22/10/2022 13:06

Love Jasmine
Violet is ok
Dislike Elana - a bit forgettable
I pronounce Yasmine as Yazz-meen rather than to rhythm with Jasmine. I like Jasmine much more.

sopeas · 22/10/2022 13:46

Jasmine is beautiful. The best one on your list 😊

Elana would probably cause difficulties as PPs have said. I’d pronounce this eh-larna as when I see Lana on its own I’d pronounce larna.

I also like Yasmin but prefer Jasmine overall! Not crazy about Violet but it does seem much-loved on here. I just don’t like the Vi nn - and you can never control what the nn would be in the future but vivi or just v would be much nicer imo

Frazzled2207 · 22/10/2022 13:51

Love Violet
jasmine/Yasmin are ok.
Elana not keen- people will think you’ve misspelt Elena and/or not know how to pronounce

Campolini · 22/10/2022 13:52

I'm a yasmin and tbh don't bother you spend your entire life telling people how to spell it and saying 'no I'm not jasmine '

No it has no E (or has an e)
Or no it doesn't have a Z in it
Yes it's with a 'Y'

I also don't like Jasmin fwiw

Love violet tho

FennelAndOnions · 22/10/2022 14:38

I really dislike Violet and don’t get the love for it. It’s so harsh sounding and I hate Vi as a shortening.

Jasmine and Yasmin are lovely. For some reason I read Elana as El-ay-na.

ChagSameachDoreen · 22/10/2022 16:00

Violet - horrible. One letter away from violent.

Jasmine - always strikes me as a fake name.

Yasmine - prefer Yasmin.

Elana - nice. I know a few Elanas. All Jewish.

How do they pronounce it?

timoteigirl · 22/10/2022 21:49

Violet - I like it. Fresh and not as common as Lily or Poppy
Jasmine - okayish
Yasmine - nope
Elana - okay although prefer Eliana

Fivebeanchilli · 22/10/2022 21:55

Violet - nice. Quite popular but pleasant. I can't imagine anyone using Vi as a nn nowadays.

Jasmine - ok. I know a few and they are all known as Jazz which would put me off

Elana - I would definitely pronounce it el - AR - na. I don't think it's that unusual. Eliana is probably more common where I live though.

Yasmine - I don't like the e on the end. Yasmin is the normal spelling. I'd wonder if Yasmine is meant to be said yas-MEEN. It's ok though - maybe a bit meh

Thisisnotmyname2 · 22/10/2022 21:55

Love violet and jasmine. Prefer Elena to Elana. Not keen on yasmine.

Penguinsaregreat · 22/10/2022 21:57

Elana- no too much mispronunciation.
Violet is ok.
Jasmine & Yasmine are very similar to me and my favours from your list with Jasmine just pipping it.

User6761 · 23/10/2022 20:33

Violet - don't like, find it harsh sounding and written down its too close to Violent for me. In terms of flower names much prefer Iris and Rose.

Jasmine - I have a lovely relative in her 20s called this. It's a nice name and I'm surprised it's not more popular.

Yasmine - much prefer Jasmine.

Elana - have never come across this. Knew an Elena (Elaine-a). It's ok but to me a bit boring.

SpentDandelion · 23/10/2022 20:55

I like Jasmina, as in the climbing rose, l know two ladies called Jasmine and both get call Jazz. Violet is nice but would probably get shortened to Vi.
I work with a young girl called Eden, which l think is a pretty name, l prefer Jasmin from your choices.

nelliebear8 · 23/10/2022 20:57

Unpopular opinion, but I really don’t like violet. It sounds too harsh to me, like the word violent.
Jasmine and Yasmine are nice, I prefer the former.
Elana is very pretty but will get mispronounced and misspelled.
