I served a lady at work today who was wearing a necklace with Mariana on it and I thought 🤔 what a lovely name it was! Classic, different in the UK, not out there ,easy to spell and a choice of short versions Mari and Ana obviously, Maria and Riana also

Trench
Marijuana

Motherofalegend · 20/10/2022 18:44

Reminds me of an Italian sauce.

anotheroneinhere · 20/10/2022 18:45

My MIL was called Mariana. Beautiful name.

MbatataOwl · 20/10/2022 18:45

Marinara sauce

mauvish · 20/10/2022 18:47

I love it!

SummaLuvin · 20/10/2022 18:55

I prefer the simple and beautiful Marina. I knew a Marianne growing up, but am unfamiliar with the name Mariana, I must admit I initially read it as Marinara and thought of the sauce like PP. But I love the name Margarita and the pizza/cocktail association doesn't put me off.

Makes me think immediately of the trench.

Goodoldvera · 20/10/2022 19:41

What's the trench?

My MIL was called Mariana. Beautiful name.

I thought it was probably a name very popular in certain cultures, but at the same time not weird in mine either. So a lovely versatile name overall! I guess there are 2 ways of pronunciation hence the Pizza references. I'm reading and pronouncing it at Marie Anna

It's a bit of a mouthful, I much prefer Marianne.

Spicycurry · 20/10/2022 19:53

In the moated grange … I think it’s lovely.

Goodoldvera · 20/10/2022 19:55

Ok...a trench named after a significant woman. Rules out lots of names Elizabeth Victoria also?

If you Google the name Victoria, you get pages about queen Victoria. If you Google Mariana you get pages about the trench. It's the first association for many people I'd guess.

solania · 20/10/2022 20:36

I have a lovely friend called Marianna so I have a soft spot for it. I think it's lovely 😊

RascafríaMom · 20/10/2022 20:38

I know a toddler with this name. It is adorable. :) Easy and similar pronunciation in English and Spanish.

S25 · 20/10/2022 20:39

Mariana is lovely but I’m afraid the first thing I thought was marinara sauce and a pp has also said how close it is to marijuana in pronunciation too.
Marine/Marina is gorgeous though

solania · 20/10/2022 20:42

I don’t get the marajuana connection unless you’re pronouncing it "marry-ahh-na"? My friend pronounces it marry-anna, short a's like Marianne.

Marina makes me think of Last of the Summer Wine 😆 dates me rather!

motleymop · 20/10/2022 20:45

God I would not have even thought of marinara sauce or marijuana - they're both quite a leap.

toulet · 20/10/2022 20:55

I guess if depends on how much you mix with other cultures, I think of it as a name first.

this is the Mns baby name board! There always huge leaps 😁 & a weird lack of diversity

I know a few Mariana's and all are Romanian. I believe it is a pretty common name in parts of Europe.

KirstenBlest · 20/10/2022 20:59

@solania , I say marijuana as Marry Wanna and marinara as Marry-narra
