Indecisivenamer · 19/10/2022 15:35

Got some useful feedback on here earlier in the summer on what was then a ridiculously long list of girls names. A name for a sister for Barnaby due any week now!

Narrowed it down to the below 10:
Stella
Sydney
Etta/Odette
Una
Alva
Primrose
Marnie
Remi
Meadow
Romilly/Romy

Any comments/favourites amongst these?

I love Stella, Una, Romilly. Etta is ok. I don’t really like the others, sorry! I just can’t imagine a grown woman called the likes of Meadow or Primrose.
If Barnaby will ever get Barney I wouldn’t do Marnie. It would be a bit of a mouthful.

Heavenknows22 · 19/10/2022 15:48

Not keen on your names sorry but I quite like Odette (never known one.) And I agree with pp, not Primrose.

hulahoopqueen · 19/10/2022 15:52

Stella - pretty but a little old-fashioned
Sydney - bit 80s
Etta/Odette - both lovely
Una - not keen
Alva, Primrose - both very pretty
Marnie - LOVE but not sure it "goes" if that is important?
Remi - same as Marnie
Meadow - pretty but again a very different vibe to Barnaby
Romilly/Romy - not sure tbh

Stella - I know it initially means star but all I think of is the lager which doesn’t go with a classic name like Barnaby imo.

How about Estelle though?

Sydney - it’s ok but again such a different vibe to Barnaby.

Etta/Odette - Odette has more of the same vibe as Barnaby. I also love the name Etta!

Una - I grew up in Spain and uña (pronounced slightly different but spelling the same just makes me think of it) it means finger nails 🤷🏼‍♀️

Alva - pretty

Primrose - this seems to divide MN but I love it and think it’s goes well with Barnaby

Marnie - not if you call Barnaby Barney for short!
Remi - I like this

Meadow - a bit too out there for my liking but it also doesn’t go with the classic feeling of Barnaby.

Romilly/Romy - quite like these!

ShesThunderstorms · 19/10/2022 16:00

I really like your list.
My favourites are Romy, Marnie and Meadow.

AdaColeman · 19/10/2022 16:00

Romilly is my favourite, with Stella a close second.

I'm not keen on any of the others, especially Alva, Etta or Remi.

ShesThunderstorms · 19/10/2022 16:01

Ohhh yes I didn't think- if Barnaby is ever shortened to Barney or ever likely to be, I wouldn't go with Marnie.

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/10/2022 16:08

I love Barnaby

Stella - I like this and see it more as a name now, I used to only associate it with the larger as it's reputation

Sydney - love it

Etta/Odette - love Etta, but I'm not a fan of Odette

Una - I really like it spelt Oona

Alva - not a fan

Primrose - lovely name but I'm.not a huge fan of Rosie which I imagine it may get shortened to

Marnie - I like it but not as much as some of your other names

Remi - not a fan. I always think names ending in an 'i' seem downmarket

Meadow - nope

Romilly/Romy - it's ok

I would choose Barnaby and Etta or Barnaby and Sydney

Cleopatra67 · 19/10/2022 16:23

Stella or Romilly. Both lovely names - as is Barnaby.

Sandysandwich · 19/10/2022 16:32

I love Romy

I like Marnie too but Barney and Marnie is a bit much but if he is always Barnabus thats not really an issue

GlassDeli · 19/10/2022 16:37

I like Meadow, Stella and Romilly best.

Mumofgirls2017 · 19/10/2022 16:47

Romilly, Primrose or Etta

pilates · 19/10/2022 17:09

Etta/Odette best
Marnie worst

NotEnoughMud · 19/10/2022 17:29

Etta!

FennelAndOnions · 19/10/2022 18:52

Romilly, if I had to choose. I don’t like any of the others, if I’m honest.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 19/10/2022 20:10

I thought Matilda before I saw your list, but out of yours I like Primrose.

nelliebear8 · 19/10/2022 20:39

Primrose! Use Primrose! I love it so much, it’s my favourite.

Otherwise, Stella and Marnie are very nice too.

Purpleavocado · 19/10/2022 20:42

I love Romilly and Sydney, I really don't like Primrose, imagine being teased for that in school.

cheapskatemum · 19/10/2022 20:57

I love Marnie, but think it sounds to similar to Barnaby. When they're older, you'll be calling one of them & they'll both come! I also like Etta, Remi and Meadow. I hope all goes well with the birth.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/10/2022 21:50

Oona or Stella

Stella - I really like it, and goes very well
Sydney - I do like it as a girls name, but as a boys name it has a similar vibe to Barney so in your case I wouldn’t.

Etta/Odette - I don’t think Odette translates well to English.. too like odour
Una 💯 favourite, but spelt Oona, you do not want it pronounced Yew-na
Alva - nope, depressed aging barmaid
Primrose - nope drippy as fuck
Marnie - nope not with Barney
Remi - not unless you are giving birth to a 60 year old French bloke
Meadow - no - makes me think of the Sopranos, but more relevantly also all the River/Ocean/Skye names have had their day
Romilly/Romy - Romilly is alright, but a bit much with Barnaby and v of the moment

Thisisnotmyname2 · 19/10/2022 21:54

Love Sydney for a girl

caitlinrose · 19/10/2022 21:58

Stella - this is cute and I love the meaning. It's on and off our list because I cannot make up my mind. On the one hand I think it's a bright and lovely name, on the other hand it reminds people of bars and beer from what I've heard. It's also close to Ella and Isabella which are popular (I love Isabella, though).
Sydney - it's a name my husband would like. I find it slightly 80s/90s dated and a bit trendy but fine.
Etta/Odette - Do you mean Etta as a nickname for Odette? Doesn't work, in my opinion. Etta is not my favourite. Odette is okay.
Una - I dislike the look of this but Oona is fine.
Alva - it's fine but the sound is so common now (Ayla, Alba, Ava).
Primrose - okay but the nickname Prim isn't great and it's still very Hunger Games to me.
Marnie - reminds me of the Hitchcock movie which is scary and of the word maniac, sorry.
Remi - Rémy is a French boys name and nice. I dislike Remi it seems trendy and not classy.
Meadow - okay. I like other nature names like Sky better.

Stella.

PilatesWife · 19/10/2022 22:03

i know it’s not what you are asking but I always think Barnaby pairs well with a J name - hard/soft balance.

Jacinta? Johanna? Jocasta? Jonquil?

whatausername · 19/10/2022 22:04

Una or Odette - love them!

FredinBread · 20/10/2022 03:06

Romilly, Alva or Una
