What about Poppy?

My husband suggested Poppy yesterday. I like some nature names and I think it's sort of cute but there are a few things I'm worrying about:

Is it too childish?

Has it been ruined by the "Trolls" movie?

Is it already dated? It was number 5 at one point but has fallen now.

Do you know very many?

I personally think it has a happy, pleasant sound, sort of like Holly which is now also on our list. It also makes me think of the colour red as does Ruby which is on our list as well and I like that. Poppies are lovely flowers too!

I love it. My Grand daughter is Poppy and I know all Nan's are bias but she's beyond adorable. I can't stop squeezing her. 😂

FennelAndOnions · 15/10/2022 10:42

I personally don’t like Poppy as it’s too twee and cutesy.

Also it’s really really popular and just gets added to the filler middle name of Rose/May/Grace. Every Poppy is one of those.

Holly I love. Also like Hallie and Callie.

ofwarren · 15/10/2022 10:43

I prefer Holly to Poppy. For some reason to me, it sounds a bit childish for an adult. I'm not sure why. Maybe the 'pop' sound.
I don't hate it though.

ArcaneWireless · 15/10/2022 10:44

I think Poppy is a lovely name.

Mol1628 · 15/10/2022 10:44

I just can’t imagine an adult Poppy for some reason. It’s not terrible though.

shiningstar2 · 15/10/2022 10:46

When I think of poppy I think of a cute little girl. I'm not sure it fits with an older woman. I like the name though. Could you use it as a shortened version of something else is then DD will have a choice when she is older. I know a to little girl who is Mandy. Her full name is Amanda. She is a very cute little Mandy and has the choice of Amanda if she would rather when she is older.

caitlinrose · 15/10/2022 10:55

I thought about that but Poppy is a full name to me because it's the name of a flower.

I read Penelope "Poppy" online but found that a bit far-fetched, to be honest. I know a Greek woman named Penelope, called Popi, and apparently that's common in Greece but it's said po-pee, not popp-ee and makes more sense to me because it repeats the long O-sound in Penelope.

Not a fan. I prefer stronger names and also not keen on Holly/ Molly etc

sheepandcaravan · 15/10/2022 10:59

I have a Poppy Holly.

Christmas Day baby, my gran was Poppy Ivy, so a sort of tribute to her.

Her sister calls her Poppy horror which is fairly accurate to be fair....

worriedatthistime · 15/10/2022 11:01

I like it and In 10/20 years will be older adult poppys and we will all get used to it
I mean no one expected names like arthur and stuff to come back around
Names are like fashion in general

This is true

worriedatthistime · 15/10/2022 11:02

@Cleopatra67 what constitutes a stronger name ?

KangarooKenny · 15/10/2022 11:03

I like it more than Holly.

I like it more than Holly.

I agree.

I know 1 adult Poppy so no issue with it for an adult for me.

allboysmum3 · 15/10/2022 11:09

Poppy is cute. Although i do love the name Ivy. There are lots of children with the name poppy and Lily etc, all flower names and all very acceptable.

Twizbe · 15/10/2022 11:15

I knew an adult poppy once. It did not suit her at all. She was the least flowery sort of person you'd ever meet.

Put me off all flower names tbh.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 15/10/2022 11:16

It's too childish for an adult woman. It's a nickname.

SpringIntoChaos · 15/10/2022 11:19

Very twee...I just can't imagine being called Poppy as a 45 year old accountant 🤷‍♀️

Himawarigirl · 15/10/2022 11:25

I have a grown-up friend called Poppy and it doesn’t feel silly or twee on her, feels like a very reasonable name for her as an adult.

GlassDeli · 15/10/2022 11:58

I like both Poppy and Holly.

S25 · 15/10/2022 12:01

We have a Poppy in our family and she’s sunshine and happiness personified and an absolutely whirlwind- she’s just a fantastic little girl. It’s a lovely happy lively name to me. I also know a few adult Poppy’s around my age (so born in the early to mid 90s) and they are also lovely - both very kind so this name gets a big thumbs up from me - only happy positive connotations ☀️

sandytooth · 15/10/2022 12:07

Is it too childish?

I don't think it is tbh, no different to Luna and much better than Daisy. By the time she's older it will just be her name.

Has it been ruined by the "Trolls" movie? no idea not seen it.

Is it already dated? It was number 5 at one point but has fallen now. it might be dated but it doesn't sound retro or anything to my ears, if you like it go for it.

Do you know very many? I know zero poppys.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 15/10/2022 13:06

There are lots of tween and teen Poppies around so she would likely meet very few at school and then be surrounded by them in the workplace, which has been my experience with my name.

I personally prefer Polly.

ChagSameachDoreen · 15/10/2022 15:09

Horrible. Not a pleasant sound. Like popping zits.

Thisisnotmyname2 · 15/10/2022 16:52

I like it, nothing wrong with it. Also like Holly and Ruby but I would probably only use Holly for a winter baby.
