What about Poppy?

My husband suggested Poppy yesterday. I like some nature names and I think it's sort of cute but there are a few things I'm worrying about:

Is it too childish?

Has it been ruined by the "Trolls" movie?

Is it already dated? It was number 5 at one point but has fallen now.

Do you know very many?

I personally think it has a happy, pleasant sound, sort of like Holly which is now also on our list. It also makes me think of the colour red as does Ruby which is on our list as well and I like that. Poppies are lovely flowers too!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I like it. I know a very glamorous adult Poppy. She was a model in her 20s and is now in her 30s. So I definitely don't have the 'little girl' association. It is fairly popular but I wouldn't let that put you off as it is a lovely name!

Lilacsunflowers · 15/10/2022 17:00

I dislike it strongly. Poppy is way too twee, like Poppet and just one letter from Poopy Blush

AnnapurnaSanctuary · 15/10/2022 17:02

I love Poppy! I like Holly too. Neither are too common around here.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 15/10/2022 17:04

I love the name Poppy. Holly would make me think she was a Christmas Day baby because that true of two Hollies I know.

mondler · 15/10/2022 17:07

I know one in her 40s and it still suits her. I also know 3 under 7 so quite popular over the last few years here. I like it.

If you like nature names have you considered Fearne or Heather?

Kanaloa · 15/10/2022 17:07

It’s a nice name. I know quite a few - not on the Amelia/Olivia/Sophia scale but far from uncommon.

I don’t know why people are saying ‘it’s a nickname’ and ‘choose a longer name.’ It isn’t a nickname or shortening. It’s not short for anything. Nobody is called Popelia, Poppy for short. Or Popivia/Popiana etc. It’s not a shortening of a longer name, and trying to squeeze it out of Penelope is just daft.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 15/10/2022 20:24

I don’t like Poppy sorry, I think it’s a silly name if you’re over 10. Holly is lovely though.

Zosime · 15/10/2022 20:34

just one letter from Poopy

I imagine it becoming Ploppy at primary school.

DramaAlpaca · 15/10/2022 20:35

Truly awful. Twee, cutesy and insubstantial. I've said it before but it sounds more like a silly noise than a name. I don't think of the flower at all when I hear it.

dammit88 · 15/10/2022 20:40

I love it. Pretty and gentle sounding to me. I worked with a lady called Poppy 20 ish years ago who was around 40 herself then - I think it must have been a nickname for her but I though it was lovely then.

TempsPerdu · 15/10/2022 20:52

I’m another one who finds Poppy twee - for me it’s definitely the ‘pop’ sound, as in ‘popsicle’, ‘popcorn’ or ‘poppet’ - there’s something insipid and childish about it.

I do quite like Holly, though, even though it’s not really my style - it’s a cheerful, happy name, and somehow feels that bit less twee and that bit more serious than Poppy.

Shannith · 15/10/2022 21:30

My horse is called Poppy. Doesn't suit her at all. <<unhelpful>>

Mad1988 · 15/10/2022 21:33

Just finished reading a book called The family way by Tony Parsons and there was a Poppy in it. Found it cute.
Could it be the nickname for Penelope? Think about Penelope Cruz, she is gorgeous!

LosingTheWill2022 · 15/10/2022 21:43

I love it!
I get that some may find it twee etc. But no name is universally liked.
There are loads of women named Poppy. I've come across doctors, a solicitor and a professor. None seemed to have any problems being treated seriously or respected professionally! That's such an odd argument for a perfectly normal name.
The poppy is a flower with lovely associations and many forms and colours so not a silly thing to be named after.
It's common enough to not be out there, but not super common.

Go for it if you like it.

birchtree23 · 15/10/2022 21:43

I have a Poppy Bell but she's mostly called Pops 😂

sheepandcaravan · 15/10/2022 21:59

@birchtree23 same.

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 15/10/2022 22:19

I mean it's not for me at all I don't like the pop/pops/ popcorn/ popsicle/ poppet
Basically "pop" sound it's vile

And people calling them "Pops" is just cringe 😬

Plus I know a woman with a Poppy who's a nightmare child I'd always associate it with her!!!!!

But each to their own do whatever you think 🤔

DemBonesDemBones · 16/10/2022 10:51

It's not very imaginative. Inoffensive, but boring.

She is gorgeous but her name isn’t Poppy - it’s Penelope. Telling people your daughter is Penelope but you want them to call her Poppy will sound convoluted and daft and the child will end up being the actual shortening of Penelope, which is Penny.

How is it ‘vile?’ What’s vile about the sound ‘pop’ or the name Poppy?

LosingTheWill2022 · 16/10/2022 11:20

I agree @Kanaloa
The fact that @OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside chose to come on a baby name thread and use the word "vile" says so much more about the poster than the name.

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/10/2022 11:22

Lovely name, really like it.

It’s typical of mumsnet tbh. Perfectly normal and wearable names like the popular but still nice Jackson are ‘grim’ and ‘vile’ and ‘terrible.’ Like if you want to be a 20p snob just be one, but be open about it.

Namechangedforspooky · 16/10/2022 11:29

I worked with a Poppy who was a doctor. No one batted an eyelid! I wouldn’t let that put you off

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 16/10/2022 11:37

I prefer Holly but Poppy is fine and a perfectly useable name. I do think it's in the vicinity of twee but not ridiculously so. And I agree with you that Poppy as short for Penelope is convoluted.
