What about Poppy?

My husband suggested Poppy yesterday. I like some nature names and I think it's sort of cute but there are a few things I'm worrying about:

Is it too childish?

Has it been ruined by the "Trolls" movie?

Is it already dated? It was number 5 at one point but has fallen now.

Do you know very many?

I personally think it has a happy, pleasant sound, sort of like Holly which is now also on our list. It also makes me think of the colour red as does Ruby which is on our list as well and I like that. Poppies are lovely flowers too!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

She is gorgeous but her name isn’t Poppy - it’s Penelope. Telling people your daughter is Penelope but you want them to call her Poppy will sound convoluted and daft and the child will end up being the actual shortening of Penelope, which is Penny.

But you don’t need to tell anyone her full name is Penelope. Just introduce them as Poppy. Then the child has options.

My friends have a Betty. Bc name is Elizabeth, but she’s never introduced as that.

So love the name Poppy, choose it and name your child Poppy, introduce her as Poppy, sign her up to nursery as Poppy, tell the child her name is Poppy… then put an unrelated name that you don’t really like but which happens to start with the same letter on her birth certificate? What would be the point of that? That’s like saying ‘Holly is a bit short. You can just call her Holly and tell everyone her name is Holly, but put Henrietta-Maria on her birth certificate, to give her options.’

Fivebeanchilli · 16/10/2022 13:15

I like it. It's not particularly exciting but perfectly normal and pleasant. I know quite a few adult Poppys and none of them have any issues with the name.

Lilacsunflowers · 16/10/2022 18:35

Ridiculous idea.

So you call your child Poppy and everyone calls her Poppy. But her 'real' name is something completely different and unrelated?!

As I my name is Sarah but I'm actually Samantha Confused?!

Lilacsunflowers · 16/10/2022 18:37

And I personally find Poppy too cutesy and twee sounding, almost comical, like Poppet.

SpinningFloppa · 16/10/2022 18:39

No kid’s will be thinking about trolls. They will be thinking Poppy playtime!

Stressfordays · 16/10/2022 18:44

I have a Poppy with whats classed as a 'generic' middle name that is actually her great grandmas name who was end of life when she was born (died 1 week later, the day after meeting her). She is a sunny, happy little soul and very much suits her name. I've known doctors called poppy too.

Lilacsunflowers · 16/10/2022 18:44

Poppy playtime looks awful

Bananamaman · 16/10/2022 20:18

We nearly called DD Poppy- it's a lovely name and perfectly fine whether she ends up a duchess or a dustwoman.

sheepandcaravan · 16/10/2022 21:05

@OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside what are your children called?

I ask as a mum if a poppy Holly. Not bothered in the slightest by your comments but intriguing as she is very much a poppy.

lightisnotwhite · 16/10/2022 21:14

Poppy Delevingne springs to mind for me. A nice name, for nice middle class gels.
I don’t think anyone could hate the name but like all the flowers it’s a bit yawn.

DeeDeeDaisy · 16/10/2022 22:07

If popularity bothers you, I'm a primary school teacher and at my current school there is at least one Poppy in each year group.

I don't really have any strong opinions on it. It is quite cutesy but I don't think that will matter when there's lots of adult Poppys about

Irrelevant what my kids are called
It's a thread asking for opinions on Poppy
I just don't like Poppy or any other combo's of the name
Just that really

ShesThunderstorms · 16/10/2022 22:15

It's not offensive. It's just boring to me.

maddy68 · 16/10/2022 22:23

My best friend is called poppy. She's in her 50s. Still cute

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/10/2022 23:02

It’s too twee. As is Holly.

Ruby is sparky though.

sheepandcaravan · 17/10/2022 20:45

@OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside relevant because it's a baby name thread and you use the word vile. Which is really reserved for true horrific crimes and incidents.

But as @LosingTheWill2022 says it says more about you. Hence the interest in your names. Which, by the way, even if were TV box and carrot I would never use the word vile.

berksandbeyond · 17/10/2022 21:27

I think it's a lovely name for a little girl but not as much for a grown woman. It's a bit too cutesy for my taste!

DurdleSnore · 17/10/2022 22:09

I like Poppy, it’s a happy and sunny name and the Poppy I know embodies these characteristics well, she’s a real bundle of sparkly energy.

I had it on my list and had considered how it would grow with my daughter but given the popularity of the name now, there will be hundreds of adults named Poppy, all with different careers and we won’t bat an eyelid.

I would use it if you love it but she may not be the only one in her class.

RoseAndGeranium · 17/10/2022 22:13

Love Poppy. Might text chosen it for our daughter but our surname wouldn’t have worked with it at all.

BabyClicks · 18/10/2022 00:16

We have a Poppy, and still love the name. She is almost 4 now and hasn't had many Trolls references - the popularity seems to have passed. She does like sharing a name with the character though - especially the Princess/Queen title :)

My husband and I always loved the name and it isn't overly common in our country, but we were unsure about the cutesy connotations. Then we worked with an adult Poppy who suited the name to a tee and showed us it can work on an adult. Names grow with people, but only you can decide if Poppy is too cute. Every name will get hate from someone for some reason - too cute, too old fashioned, too modern, too common, too uncommon, too long, too short...

We have another daughter on the way and are considering Ruby, Margot and Hazel. We still have a while to decide.
