Is Ava too popular?

I’m really liking the name Ava for my baby girl. I’m wondering if it is too popular, as I hear it a lot and it has been one of the top baby girl names for a while. Big sister is Lily Kate, and we are going with the middle name Mai for this baby. I’ve also thought of Amelia as it also goes well with Lily but it may also be too popular/boring. Just how popular is Ava? Is it more popular than ever now? I don’t want my daughter to be one of 5 other girls in her class with the same name. Should we go with something more unusual this time round?

Ava mai? Yes she will be one of many many many up to you though

LizaSimpson · 11/10/2022 17:13

Its extremely popular, it's been on the top girls names for awhile now.

SpinningFloppa · 11/10/2022 17:19

Teaming it with mai I bet 90% of avas are Ava mai/may/mae the other 10 being rose or grace.

violetcuriosity · 11/10/2022 17:25

I've got an Ava, she's 9, there weren't really
many Ava's about when I had her (primary school teacher) and tbf there's not many in her school now. Go with the name you like.

fyn · 11/10/2022 17:28

Ava is the 4th most popular baby and Lily is the 7th based on the naming statistics for last year. If Lily’s popularity doesn’t bother you then Ava isn’t much different!

Cece92 · 11/10/2022 17:33

I honestly only know 1 and she's in my DD class. My DD is Sophia. I knew 0 Sophia's and low and behold she went to primary school and there was 3 in her class. Now there is none but the other 2 are in the other class. I love Ava Mai such a beautiful girly name 😊😊😊

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 11/10/2022 17:34

It'd be too popular for me tbh. I'm currently going to baby classes and it's popular.

S25 · 11/10/2022 17:39

I think it’s very popular at the moment - especially teaming it with a May variation for a middle name as a PP has mentioned. Are there any other names you like at all?

ChocolateSpreadOnToast · 11/10/2022 17:50

Oh man, every Ava will be Ava Mai/May/Mae. It’s soooo overused! If not May then Ava Rose or Ava Grace. If you’re not bothered about a name that is extremely popular and will date massively then go for it.

Mai is a terrible spelling.

chaotical · 11/10/2022 18:06

It's been popular for a good ten years at least, has it not?

I remember being baffled when it first became popular because I'd literally never heard of it before and suddenly there were baby girls named Ava everywhere.

I predict it will be dated in the future, but if the popularity doesn't bother you, by all means go for it.

Lilacsunflowers · 11/10/2022 18:32

It's way overdone! It will start to sound dated..

Hoowhoowho · 11/10/2022 18:56

Yes very overused and on way down, being replaced by Ada and Ayla. Nice name but very very popular.

bloominglovelyorange · 11/10/2022 20:18

I agree with PP that if the popularity of Lily doesn't bother you then Ava isn't much different at all. In fact your two daughters will have names of similar popularity which might be a plus for them?
Ava is lovely by the way. I actually don't know any

RuthW · 11/10/2022 21:38

No more popular than Lily. Go for it.

ChagSameachDoreen · 11/10/2022 22:27

Very common.

And awful. Makes me think of birds scrabbling around on an aviary floor.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/10/2022 23:03

No more popular than Lily

I would think of something else for a middle name, but at least spell May May. Mai is ridiculous.

Turkeylurky · 11/10/2022 23:19

My Ava is almost 16, and was almost unheard of when she was born. We chose it as it sounded pretty and unusual. I think if you like the name you should use it.

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 12/10/2022 06:24

Yes, it’s incredibly popular and has been for years now. Same as the middle name May/Mae. (I assume ‘May’ is how you plan to pronounce ‘Mai’? But I’d suggest using a different spelling as ‘Mai’ is pronounced like ‘my’).

Ava and May are not only two very popular names, but ‘Ava May’ as a full name is also very very popular.

DuchessOfSausage · 12/10/2022 08:40

Too popular. I don't like it at all. Mai is ok if you are Welsh but if you are saying it as May, little Ava Mai will be yet another Ava May.

Anjo2011 · 12/10/2022 08:43

Very popular here too. Saying that, she’s your baby, if you like it then use it.

Lilacsunflowers · 12/10/2022 08:44

Ava has lost its appeal through overuse. There are just too many Avas around!

PeekAtYou · 12/10/2022 08:45

Ava is a good name but it will get lumped with Eva/Eve/Evie etc

If you are worried about other girls called Ava then think of an unusual middle name. The top 3 middle names for girls are Mai/Mae/May, Grace and Rose ime so if there's another Ava then there's a super high chance that she will have the same middle name too.

3peassuit · 12/10/2022 08:46

There are 3 in my granddaughter’s reception class.

myexisawanker · 12/10/2022 08:51

It's pretty but really very popular.
It goes much better with Lily than Amelia (which I personally dislike as a name as it sounds meeeely !)

Is Mai being pronounced as May? Or my ?

myexisawanker · 12/10/2022 08:52

I'd suggest Maya pronounced My-a and a completely different middle name
