As per title I am due dd in a couple of weeks and keep going backwards and forwards with her name choice.
We can't decide between Dorothy and Dorothea. I love Dorothy but not sure if it's a bit marmite? But maybe Dorothea is a bit of a mouthful?
Would appreciate opions thank you.

Definitely Dorothy, I love it.

I wouldn't use Dorothea because I really dislike Thea.

jocktamsonsbairn · 11/10/2022 22:51

@Luredbyapomegranate I agree, started singing "I'm off to see the wizard..." in my head when I read Dorothy.
Sorry OP.

Dorothy

Can still use NN Thea if you want, and I think it's a nicer names.

But you have time after she's here to try them both out and see what you think.

Dorothea

I always said I would call a daughter this but DH vetoed it. I'm not sure I've ever really forgiven him!

Oh god OP this is a Mumsnet 50/50 conundrum for you

IStandWithMaya · 12/10/2022 21:18

Dorothea

Dorothea.

Dorothy is just one of those names that should never have been in fashion, let alone coming back into fashion!

AnotherOde · 12/10/2022 21:33

Dorothy. I love Dotty for a nickname too.

Dorothea sounds like a made up name.

I know I thought it would be less even. I do love Dorothy but it's a name that is really disliked by others and I don't really want that for my child. But it's so cute. Dorothea is feel is more edgy and no one would hate it , but I don't really like Thea that much. Was almost certain on Dorothea yesterday now I am confused again.
Also I am now being induced on Thursday so I need to choose fast.

My Grandma was Dorothy. She was feisty, with such a warm side to her. She went away to university at a time when it was harder for women. She played excellent golf and tennis; sung like an angel and played the piano.

She also wasn’t my grandma by birth, but she loved me fiercely, and was extremely adept at specific praise, which gave me such confidence in my abilities as a child.

Dorothy is an amazing name!! ❤️

Enko · 13/10/2022 11:19

They are both lovely. Imo. Marmite names mean nothing people get used to it as they grow to like your dd

Jennywren1975 · 13/10/2022 11:23

Dorothea. Also like Thea.

Fivebeanchilli · 14/10/2022 08:41

I know two young adult Dorothys. They are both around 20-22. Dorothy suits them - they are both beautiful, bright, feisty and fun. To be honest, I think anyone makes their name not the other way round.

nelliebear8 · 14/10/2022 17:40

Love both, Dorothy is more classic and has the amazing Wizard of Oz association, but Dorothea has the option of Thea.

BuryingAcorns · 14/10/2022 17:41

I prefer Dorothea. I love that name, and love Thea as a nn. Dorothy just reminds me of Wizard of Oz. Dorothea is way more elegant.

PearlSupernova · 14/10/2022 17:48

Dorothy

TheSmallestOneWasMadeline · 16/10/2022 12:42

Dorothea. I went to school with one (Dutch). She pronounced it Doro-taya but went by Doro, I used to be really jealous of her name!!

Pamlar · 16/10/2022 13:25

Dorothea

Dorothea (can then shorten to Thea) and not what you asked but alethea is a nice name, with options to shorten to Lethie and thea
