Boyfriend thinks my top 3 names are silly, are there any similar?

So I have a top 3 for boys and a top 3 for girls but I can't get my boyfriend on board with any of them!

Boys are Hayes, Archer and Abel.

Girls are Amelie, Nora and Jovie.

He hates them all and refuses to flex. When we named our first child it took forever to come to an agreement on his name, so I just know its going to be a struggle all over again! Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, OP, I agree with your partner. I strongly dislike all your names. We just have different taste I suppose.

LazyLikeSundayMorning · 11/10/2022 02:14

How about Gilbert?

Cheeky! 😆

Trez1510 · 11/10/2022 02:48

I think for a girl, you should go for a short name.

Orla
Jura
Thea

For a boy, something with the same vibe and length as Sullivan.

Dominic
Anderson
Ricardo

Hope you and your partner can reach agreement!

I heard two names I liked the other day for girls:

Haydee
Lyndall

MammyS · 11/10/2022 07:46

@PMAmostofthetime I do really like both Ellis and Myla from those lists! I also saw Nyla somewhere yesterday and that sounds really pretty too!

Thanks, definitely going on the list of suggestions!

gogohmm · 11/10/2022 07:58

Amilie and Nora are nice. Hayes is a town not a first name!

HahahaBoomBoom · 11/10/2022 08:48

I adore Jovie but I live in Scotland now and my pals think it’s hilarious because in their accent it sounds like ‘Jobby’ (poo) 🤦‍♀️

I actually quite like Hayes too but I also see the issue there. Abel goes well with Sullivan.

Good luck OP! X

I think you and your boyfriend need to accept that neither of you likes the other's names so far.

Why don't you get an old school baby names book, each go through it separately and note down every name you like. Agree on a minimum number of names you will put on your "like" list. Two or three isn't good enough, and shows that you aren't willing to be flexible. Then compare lists and see whether any of the same names are on them.

Neither of you should be trying to twist the other's arm to use any of the names you have mentioned.

babynamelover · 11/10/2022 09:16

Sullivan &

Jethro
Rhett
Patrick
Dominic
Fergus
Cole
Beckett
Quaid

Cora
Ramona
Orla
Una
Phaedra
Flora
Cassidy
Bree
Brooke

To be fair, they are spectacularly bad, though at least Abel is a name. The girl names are meh, apart from Jovie. Which is awful, and autocorrected to Jobie.

MammyS · 11/10/2022 11:24

@babyjellyfish I definitely am flexible, hence why I asked for alternative suggestions and have very clearly been saying I like lots of the suggestions and will be mentioning them to my partner. Those are just my top 3 so far.

I agree we need to go through a book or something and make maybe a list of 10 each.

MammyS · 11/10/2022 11:26

@Yesthatismychildsigh in your opinion. There are lots of names that have been mentioned instead that I personally don't like but I don't feel the need to be rude in response 😂

I know that all names come around eventually but, seriously, Nora?

I can see Mrs Slocombe coming out with “Flaming Nora”

Or it’s the name of Gladys‘s cousin in Miss Marple who is in service in the next village

Bloody Nora. Fancy being lumbered with that for the rest of your life

@Pleasebeafleabite

i have to admit to feeling the same, but 'the young things' seem keen on names I wouldn't give house room! I always think BATTY. Nora Batty of course!

@SarahTTCx good luck!!

MammyS · 11/10/2022 13:02

@FistFullOfRegrets my mam says Nora Batty too, I have no clue who that is 😂 although i'm 26 so not exactly a "young thing" but yeah, Nora is definitely starting to make a come back, as all names do eventually!

Also Scottish and I thought the same. Also makes me think of Jon Bon Jovi.

ChagSameachDoreen · 11/10/2022 15:22

They're all fine except Jovie, which sounds like something an old Jamaican man would say.

ODFOx · 11/10/2022 20:45

Jovi is the girl in Elf, played by Zoey Deschanel, who becomes Will Ferrell's love interest.

Lori has a similar vibe but is less niche.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/10/2022 23:11

Abel is nice, Amelie is overused but Ok, Nora just makes me think of snoring, but it’s getting quite popular.

Archer is slightly odd, Hayes is odd, Jovie is bizarre

Amos, Caleb, Verity, Leonie, Honor, Oona, Zoe and Josephine nn Josie or Jodie night all be alternatives

MammyS · 12/10/2022 08:54

I've been having a good look around and have added Imogen to my list and feel it has a lot of potential. We'd like middle name Alice, so Imogen Alice might go quite nicely.

Partner said its "ok". I also suggested Naomi, Hallie and Elodie, all of which he said no to. Looks like Imogen is the current front runner for a girl.
