Calling Welsh people... Caleb pronunciation

I have a soft spot for the name Caleb (pronounced Kay-leb) for my son due this winter.

Apparently it's pronounced Cal-leb in Wales. I've never heard this pronunciation as I've only heard the name in relation to an English or an American person where the pronunciation is as I'd like. I do live in a quite Welsh heavy area. Is this really how it's pronounced here? Is that like a blanket thing? Would I spend my life cursing my name choice and correcting people? Cal-leb just doesn't sound right to me.

Welsh friends of mine pronounce their Caleb as Kay-leb.

nobird · 04/10/2022 09:11

Pronounce it the way you like it said.

GogLais · 04/10/2022 09:12

If you speak Welsh, it is Cal-eb. Welsh is phonetic. Similarly, Jacob is Jac-ob. Elias El-ee-as, Eli Elly, etc

I really like Caleb as said in Welsh.

You'll/He'll probably end up correcting a few people.

Yes it’s pronounced Caleb in Welsh
cal as in calculate
leb as in Lebanon

Cal for short
its lovely

I guess that's how you'd pronounce it in a welsh accent yes, in the same way people pronounce William as wilI IAM, or James as Jems etc so it wouldn't be all people where you live but some people would.

I’m Welsh and would say Kay-lub

Another Welshie, from South Wales. I think if you are planning on him going to a Welsh medium school, he will get the Welsh pronunciation a lot among his teachers and peers.
Otherwise, you may have to correct a few people but you will mostly get the anglicised pronunciation. Especially if you are in the south.

County wise there's no choice but a Welsh medium primary school but unless they specifically request a Welsh one I'd imagine my kids will go to an English medium secondary. It is a very Welsh area which is what's worrying me. I feel like if I I'm constantly having to correct people or just let people pronounce it wrong it'll ruin the name for me. Perhaps I need to pick something that won't have that issue.

I'm Welsh I pronounce it KAY leb

Loulou1712 · 04/10/2022 09:41

I think it may be regional, I live In South wales and would probably pronounce it kay - leb, if it'll irritate you correcting people then don't go with the name. My DD2 has an unusual name and it does irriate me having to correct the pronunciation x

South Wales first language Welsh speaker here. I would look at the name written down and automatically say Cal-leb. If you told me the name first I would say Cayleb, but probably without the y sound, if you see what I mean (the way we in the south say face or case or race)
