Maia or Kaia?

I'm just wondering which one you prefer and why, Maia or Kaia?

As some of you may remember Kaya was on my husband's list, pronounced ky-a. Many people commented that they would say kay-a so I suggested Kaia to my husband instead (as some people here recommended) and he likes that as well.

But I think I like Maia much better. We still have lots of time to decide but I'd just like to know which of the two you prefer and why and to narrow down our list as much as we can. I guess Maya is out because most people would say may-a? I personally like my-a.

Some people said last time that Kaya is a name that gives them a bad image (I think words that were mentioned were "chavvy" and "trendy"). Does this apply to Kaia and Maia as well?

I personally don't think Kaya has a bad image but I'm insecure because quite a lot of people mentioned it and I don't want to cause her problems in life. I am still surprised Skye was perceived so negatively because I always saw it as a normal nature name with no particularly bad image.

I prefer Maia, but like Skye more than both Smile

KirstenBlest · 01/10/2022 18:24

Kaia. I'm not keen on it but Maia is too similar to Maya, Mya, Mia, May, Mae etc

Crankley · 01/10/2022 18:27

I'm not keen on names with more vowels than consonants so wouldn't choose either. I think that most people would pronounce Maia/Kaia as May-a/Kay-a.

Nadal · 01/10/2022 18:30

She will have to correct spellings and pronunciations her whole life.

NortieTortie · 01/10/2022 18:36

I'd still pronounce Maia as May-a. Skye is pretty.

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 01/10/2022 18:39

Definiately Kaia. Maia/Mia/Maya is done to death IMO. I recently watched "Where the Crawdads Sing" and the main character in that is called Kya (a nickname of Katherine) and the name grew on me because of the character. I do know one Kaia but it's a Turkish little boy so I think the name is unisex.

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 01/10/2022 18:40

I'd definitely pronounce Maia and Kaia as my-uh and ky-uh and think it's very obviously that this is the correct pronunciation based on the spelling.

S25 · 01/10/2022 19:32

I feel as though she’d spend her whole life correcting spellings and pronunciations!

Skye, though, is a really pretty name, I don’t know why you had bad comments about it.

Ellmau · 01/10/2022 19:34

Much prefer Maia.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 01/10/2022 19:34

Neither

SkyeBlue28 · 01/10/2022 19:38

Both names are lovely but I prefer Kaia. It’s more unusual than Maia too.

Merry0409 · 01/10/2022 19:44

I have a Maia, pronounced My a, I totally love it, and there was not another one both at primary or secondary school. She is 16 now . I was going to call her Mia, but much prefer Maia.

Longdarkcloud · 01/10/2022 19:52

My niece is Maia and there have never been any spelling or pronunciation issues. She’s just turned 21.
Maia is softer sounding that Kaia

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/10/2022 20:13

Mia is ok, just massively overused. If you want My-ah that’s probably the best spelling. I think a lot of people will say Maia as May-ah.

Kaia has a low rent feel so I wouldn’t, it echoes Kai, Kayden etc

Skye is better than Kaia I think, but like all those River/Summer type names it’s been suddenly overused, and now a bit naff

Zara, Cara, Clara, Ciara, Chiara, Katya, Anya, Natalia, Sacha, Tara, Tamara, Lara, Lyra, Leila… might be alternatives

dontyouwishyourgirlfriendwas · 01/10/2022 22:39

I met a woman recently called Naia which I thought was lovely. Sorry, not helpful but they’re all nice names.

nelliebear8 · 02/10/2022 07:20

Both are pretty, prefer Gaia though.

Enko · 02/10/2022 10:01

I love Kaia. Its pretty and fairly unusual but a name people knows.

Maia to me is run of the mill normal

timoteigirl · 02/10/2022 13:21

I would always pronounce Maia and Maya as My-a as only once ever come across the other way.

ChocolateSpreadOnToast · 02/10/2022 14:07

Maia/Mia/Mya are just really overused. Kaia would be different.

Kisskiss · 02/10/2022 14:16

Kaya is a popular type of coconut jam in Asia .. pretty name but if it gets more popular as a condiment In future here she might get bullied…

ChagSameachDoreen · 02/10/2022 14:34

Kaia/Kaya.

Maia/Maya is such a nothing-y name.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 04/10/2022 01:14

Kaia.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 04/10/2022 01:27

nelliebear8 · 02/10/2022 07:20

Both are pretty, prefer Gaia though.
