Hi all,

I'm just wondering what everyone thinks of the name Idir for a boy? It's of north African origin and means 'alive'. It fits my background but I never actually met anyone with that name. Our second choice is Elias which is lovely but I do like Idir as well. Thoughts?

I think it's a lovely name. I'm saying it in a Welsh accent in my head, how would you pronounce it?

KirstenBlest · 30/09/2022 18:38

@ContSalw , your pronunciation will be fine, Idîr Smile
@Tayahrebas , Idir will be said as Id-ear in the UK (apart from Welsh-speaker who say it as El-ee-as), and Elias as El-eye-as. I'd go for Ilyas.

Oops. That should have been

I've never encountered this name before, so I have no associations with it. I'd say it's fine as long as you're okay with having to correct the pronunciation at times.

Yeah it made me think of Idris

It’s a great name OP.

Elias is nice too, but a lot of them plus all the Elijahs about

Kite22 · 30/09/2022 22:38

It sounds a lovely name to me

blameitonthecaffeine · 01/10/2022 01:12

I haven't heard it before but I like it and it has a lovely meaning.

HammerMyhome · 01/10/2022 01:13

I read it as Lidl, sorry

AuxArmesCitoyens · 01/10/2022 19:38

Like the singer. Lovely.

S25 · 01/10/2022 19:39

Is it pronounced like i-dea or e-dea or something else?
I think it’s lovely meaning and if it honours your background that’s also lovely.

KirstenBlest · 01/10/2022 19:42

@S25 , it's pronounced Eedeer, but the eer bit is one syllable not 2 (like Dee with an R on the end, not like dee-uh

How did you get Lidl?

KirstenBlest · 01/10/2022 19:53

@s25, correction. More like Id-ee with R on the end

S25 · 01/10/2022 20:01

In my accent that sounds similar to the word idea. I think it’s lovely as it holds meaning to the OP 😊

KirstenBlest · 01/10/2022 20:21

The first I isn't said as Eye.
Idir is 2 syllables. Idea is 3.

Idir is Id-eeR
Idea is Eye-dee-uh

Tayahrebas · 01/10/2022 21:42

Thank you all, super helpful and yes it would be pronounced Id-eeR.

@KirstenBlest ah I see!! that makes sense, thanks for explaining 😊

@Tayahrebas it’s lovely & has a special meaning for you, I say go for it ❤️ Could always have Elias as the middle name. Idir Elias has a lovely flow to it

Myotherdogsaballboy · 01/10/2022 22:01

I love them both but would probably go for Elias on the basis there could be more mispronunciation issues with Ideer. Plus kids being mean and calling him idea or Oh dear.
