Thoughts on River

For a girl?

It's really growing on me. It seems a lot more useable and less out there these days. Husband says he likes it but is worried it may sound a bit pretentious.

I absolutely love it. Alas we can’t use it as our surname is a type of weed and it makes it sound like a type of river plant 😫

dutyfirstselfsecond · 28/09/2022 16:51

It's a bit pretentious. Sorry

Angelofthenortheast · 28/09/2022 16:54

I think it's really cool. Although we had a girl at school called Rain and everyone sort of said it with distain because she traded off the credibility of her cool musician parents.

If you and you're husband aren't cool I'd say go for it! 😛

Benjispruce4 · 28/09/2022 16:55

Agree with DH.

PinkButtercups · 28/09/2022 16:55

It's really popular here.

Lots of little girls called River. I also know a little boy called River.

SillyFood · 28/09/2022 16:55

I’ve only ever heard it in real life as a boy’s name but there’s a female River on Doctor Who (I think). I think it’s lovely

nancydroo · 28/09/2022 17:00

The name will slot right in with the names of her peers

BoudiccaVibes · 28/09/2022 17:01

My youngest is called River, she's 6. Beautiful name (even though my Riv is absolutely crackers).

It’s so overdone now

OldEvilOwl · 28/09/2022 17:07

I love it

KnickerlessParsons · 28/09/2022 17:10

Middle name Island?

Birdy1066 · 28/09/2022 17:12

Love that name. I remember Alex Kingston in Dr Who - if your baby grows up to be as beautiful and talented as her you can’t go wrong !

ChicagoCubsFan · 28/09/2022 17:22

I don’t like it. I know a couple of Rivers, one goes by his middle name as he hates it so much, the other is female and got called the name of a local river through school but didn’t seem to care. I think those thinks probably make me see it as not a great name.

DuchessOfSausage · 28/09/2022 17:23

A bit wet

Bettyboop3 · 28/09/2022 17:26

I love it ❤️

TheBeesKnee · 28/09/2022 17:28

It's a lovely name and not uncommon. Fleur de Force, a YouTuber, named her daughter River. It's a normal name among her cousins 😅

toastofthetown · 28/09/2022 18:56

I don't see River as a name which is in any way pretentious. It's ranked at around 150 for both boys and girls so definitely moderately popular at the very least, and part of the wider nature trend for names at the moment. Personally I prefer it for boy, though with a 334:339 ratio for boys to girls its almost perfectly unisex.

PeekAtYou · 28/09/2022 18:59

I think it's fine as long as your surname isn't Song (Dr Who) or Phoenix (the actor) and you don't mind that it's unisex

ABitPerplexed · 28/09/2022 19:21

We know a River (boy) aged 11 and one aged about 24 (male). Big River said the name was perceived to be cool and the younger one is amongst similarly unusual mix of names in yr6... its never commented on other than positively. Dont know any girls with the name, but think it would work very well

SpinningFloppa · 28/09/2022 19:42

Prefer it for a boy

HahahaBoomBoom · 28/09/2022 20:53

I love it. It’s the only name I really can’t decide whether I prefer it as a boy or girl name. Adore it though!

Heswipedright · 28/09/2022 20:54

I really like it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/09/2022 21:52

It’s not massively to my taste, but the thing that would put me off is (like say Summer) I think it’s been unusual, is now common place, and will rapidly go downmarket.

Hardly, there were 151 Rivers born last year, so around 0.02% of babies born in the UK were called this name - it's not exactly about to rival Jack or Oliver! names.darkgreener.com/#river

OP I love it for a boy or a girl :)

Annabananna1 · 28/09/2022 22:24

Lovely!
Prefer it for a boy, maybe. But lovely non the less.

It was on my list but H wasn't keen. 😞
