What are your thoughts on the name Gigi for a girl? And if it were to be a nickname which more traditional names could be used as a full name? Thanks x

I used to have a Beanie Baby poodle called Gigi. Personally I don't love it as full name, but could work for any name beginning with G. Georgia/ Georgina/ Georgiana and Giselle from my list seem like Gigi would work best with Gigi, though Gaia is my favourite G name. I'd make sure if you use Gigi as a diminutive that you really like the full name too, as if she ditches Gigi, you're not left with a name you didn't really like in the first place.

GrimmTales · 25/09/2022 21:59

No, because of the book, and the film.

User6761 · 25/09/2022 21:59

Awful as a full name. But passable as a nickname. I like Georgina.

2pinkginsplease · 25/09/2022 22:01

I know of a Gigi. Her actual name is Gabrielle

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2022 22:04

It makes a lovely diminutive for any long name beginning with a soft 'g'.

gogohmm · 25/09/2022 22:04

Sorry no, it's too often used as a name for prostitutes or strippers on tv etc. just too associated with sleeze

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 25/09/2022 22:10

Reminds me of the musical and creepy Maurice Chevalier singing Thank Heaven for Little Girls.

I'm not usually a stickler for longer formal names but Gigi seems a bit too showgirlish to be the official name. Georgina would seem to lend itself well to the Gigi nickname.

ThisIsNotAFlyingToy · 25/09/2022 22:11

Gigi in the book/film was Gilberte, apparently. Lovely in a French accent. Would work for Giselle or Genevieve (a bit).

Everylittlethingsgonnabealright · 25/09/2022 22:18

Virginia? seems a bit dated to me but could maybe could have Gigi as a nickname. But Ginny more likely.

I think Gigi sounds a bit affected tbh

Saltnpepperr · 25/09/2022 23:24

I don’t love it. And hear it pronounced differently- the softer version grates on me even more

SunshineAndFizz · 25/09/2022 23:25

I know a Gigi, short for Genevieve. Love it.

Ladybyrd · 25/09/2022 23:27

Definitely Giselle. Gigi is too cliched.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/09/2022 23:47

Not as a full name, it’s fluffy and strlppery at the same time.

Fine as a fun short form, I know a Genevieve who was sometimes GIgi, and I think it’s often Georgina.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/09/2022 23:47

Ladybyrd · 25/09/2022 23:27

Definitely Giselle. Gigi is too cliched.

Jesus not Giselle

Jizz is not a good sound in a girls name

FivePotatoesHigh · 25/09/2022 23:49

I knew a Georgia who was Gigi for short.

eleanorsmellstrop · 26/09/2022 00:08

I love the nickname Gigi but it means ‘penis’ in the language of the country where we live so can’t use it 😞 If I was in another country I would though! As a nn for Genevieve

watcherintherye · 26/09/2022 00:17

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/09/2022 23:47

Jesus not Giselle

Jizz is not a good sound in a girls name

But Giselle’s not pronounced Jizzelle, (by me, anyway Grin), it’s more like the Zh sound in Dr. Zhivago - Zhiselle!

Marcipex · 26/09/2022 00:22

No no no
It’s horrible and tacky.

And worse when pronounced with two hard g s . Gigi as in gig.

JingsMahBucket · 26/09/2022 00:22

GrimmTales · 25/09/2022 21:59

No, because of the book, and the film.

Do you really think anyone under the age 65 will care about this when the OP’s daughter starts school? Ridiculous.

L0bstersLass · 26/09/2022 00:27

The full name of the only Gigi I know is Ghislaine. Can't see that being popular.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 26/09/2022 00:36

I know two humans called Gigi; one is Virginia and the other is Brigitte. I do think that it's more of a logical shortening of Georgia/Georgina/Georgeana or perhaps Ginger, as those names have two gs in a row. Or perhaps someone with both the first and middle name, or first and last name, each starting with a G.

RestingMurderousFace · 26/09/2022 00:39

Gia is better.

mondaytosunday · 26/09/2022 00:43

I know a Gigi. Her full name is Ghislaine. She's French Canadian.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 26/09/2022 02:51

No .. it’s a pet’s name . Also awful Vogue Spencer’s daughter is called Gigi .

RuthW · 26/09/2022 03:26

It's a nickname.
