Which spelling?

So I think we’ve decided on naming our little girl Isabelle but we’re unsure on the spelling for it… we’re either thinking the French way Isabelle or Scottish way Isobel.

These are the middle names were thinking of… which do you prefer?

Isobel Primrose
(MIL middle name is isabelle and first name rose so not sure if this is OTT)

Isabelle Lula
(Lula as an honoury middle name for Louise, my mum)

thanks!

Isobel is nice, or Isabel. Isabelle is a bit fussy and unnecessary if you're not French. IMO.

Not very keen on Primrose, it's a bit prissy and twee imo. Any other Rose name would be lovely with Isobel eg Isobel Rose, Isobel Rosa, Isobel Roisin, Isobel Rosalind.

Louise is nicer than Lula, what's wrong with Louise? Especially as a middle.

wishing3 · 24/09/2022 03:39

Like sound of Isobel Primrose best, or how about Isobel Louisa?

Cantchoosename · 24/09/2022 03:40

Hi, I prefer the spelling Isabelle and I think Isabelle Primrose sounds nicer than Isabelle Lulu.

Lilacsparkles · 24/09/2022 07:03

I prefer Isabelle, I think it looks so much nicer and she could have the nickname Belle in the future if she wanted. I prefer primrose as a middle name, it’s so pretty x

KangarooKenny · 24/09/2022 07:06

I prefer Isobel.
And Louise is nicer than Lula.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 24/09/2022 07:07

louise goes better than lulu.

I think the kind of switch with your name is a wee bit much.

Largethighsbadeyes · 24/09/2022 07:08

Isobel Louise (Isobel Lulu has too many Ls and sounds silly)

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/09/2022 17:04

Isobel is great but Primrose is drippy and Lula is bleeding awful - something you’d call one of those dogs that gets kept in a handbag, or an eco friendly tampon

Isobel Louise is perfectly nice

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/09/2022 17:19

I agree, Isobel or Isabel and Louise , if that is the name you are honouring. I'm not a fan of Lula at all.

WildfellAnne · 24/09/2022 17:51

Isobel. I really think Isabelle is a bit cringey, unless you are French. I like Primrose a lot and don’t think it’s at all drippy. I’m not so keen on Lulu. Louise is better. I’d go for Isobel Primrose, though Louise is fine too.

ladygindiva · 24/09/2022 18:04

Isabel is the only spelling for me, I have one spelt that way.

toastofthetown · 24/09/2022 18:07

Isobel Primrose. The Isabelle spelling looks too frilly for me.

Echo the above posters with disliking the Lula middle name. Lula is very much a nothing sounds, and the Ls blend in with the Ls in Isobel. Love Primrose (and would use that as a first name!).

Pixiedust1234 · 24/09/2022 18:14

Isabelle is the more common way to spell it where I am

Please use Louise and not Lulu. Honour your mother properly. I could understand it if it was going to be a first name so you wanted to use lulu as a shortened version, but there's no need if its a middle name.

StarlingsInTheRoof · 24/09/2022 18:30

Isobel is the spellings I would use. Always loved the name, but had boys. I wouldn't go for a name ending with L and the middle name beginning with it too.

KylieCharlene · 24/09/2022 18:33

Isabelle Louisa is my suggestion.
Beautiful name.

caitlinrose · 24/09/2022 19:22

I prefer Isabelle. It's on our list as is Isabella.

I got a lot of "Isabel is English and Isabelle is French" comments under my post which I didn't really understand because Isabel is Spanish, Isabelle is French and Isobel is Scottish - none of them are English in origin, which is fine. So don't let that stop you. Isabella is the most common spelling in the UK as of now (I looked it up recently) so she may have to correct people a bit less often if you pick that spelling (but I think it will still be spelled all kinds of ways and no matter the spelling she'll correct it sometimes).

I also don't really pronounce them the same, for Isobel I'd me more inclined to say izz-a-bel and for Isabelle izz-a-bell. So that may be something you might want to consider.

If you have a great connection with your mother in law I'd use Isabelle to honour her, otherwise I'd just pick what you like best and what feels right. Maybe pick a middle name to honour your mum if you like.

Isabelle Lula has too many Ls.

Isabelle Primrose Lula is nice or Isabelle Primrose Louise. Isabelle Primrose Louise looks and sounds pretty.

Otherwise I'd still use Isabelle Lula (if you only want one middle name) because then both of your mums have been honoured and all the Ls don't matter that much if the names have meaning.

caitlinrose · 24/09/2022 19:23

I meant to say "Isabelle is the most popular spelling in the UK as of now" not Isabella.

Pemba · 24/09/2022 19:35

Isabel is of Spanish origin yes (I think they all originated there, its the Spanish form of Elizabeth) but up until about 10-15 years ago it was the most commonly used variant in the UK, Isobel coming second.

Now Isabelle has taken over and seems to be part of a trend for frilly fussy names on little girls, like Annabelle, or anything hyphenated with Rose, Grace or May stuck on the end.

I know Isabelle is the legitimate French spelling but it is annoying when people say that the simple versions Annabel and Isabel look 'unfinished'. No. Less is more.

DramaAlpaca · 24/09/2022 19:38

Isobel or Isabel for me, Isabelle is just too frou-frou.

Louise is a gorgeous middle name, as is Rose. I really, Intensely dislike Primrose.

Ship · 24/09/2022 19:45

Isabel Louisa I would choose. Honours both but is a slight tweak on their middle names. Isobel if not Isabel

RhubarbFairy · 24/09/2022 19:52

Isabel Primrose

DS2 was going to be Isabel and DH was lobbying for Isabel Lily. I vetoed that because I felt there were too many 'L's' that ran into each other. Same with your Lulu name. Isabel Louise is better.

Not a fan of the Isabelle spelling.

caitlinrose · 24/09/2022 19:52

It is simply a matter of personal preference. To me Isabelle isn't frilly but very elegant.

And if people think that Isabel or Annabel look unfinished (they don't to me, I actually prefer Annabel over Annabelle) then that is their opinion and it's perfectly fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to this.

ellieboolou · 24/09/2022 21:07

ladygindiva · 24/09/2022 18:04

Isabel is the only spelling for me, I have one spelt that way.

This spelling is the best IMO

Slavetotherhythm · 24/09/2022 21:10

Prefer Isabelle but maybe I am biased because my DD is one!

SleepingStandingUp · 24/09/2022 21:11

I don't understand why the middle name depends on the spelling?

I like Isobel although would instinctively go for Isabelle myself. Then as you have Isobel like MIL middle name I'd have Lula for your Mom.

Or pick two names that are just about your daughter.
