Is name Martyna a nice name for a very sweet baby girl?
How it will be perceived in UK?

Martina is the usual uk spelling. I know one who is from outside the UK. Sounds slightly old fashioned maybe to UK ears. I like it personally! There won’t be any others probably in the whole primary school

It's a pretty name.

kuvira · 23/09/2022 10:56

I've only seen the spelling Martina before. I'm not sure about England, but Martina was fairly popular in Ireland in the 1960s/70s. It sounds somewhat dated to my ears, but not horribly so. I would be pleasantly surprised to meet a young Martina.

Martina is much nicer, I'm not a fan of the trend of replacing vowels with y for babies names in general.

Violet1988 · 23/09/2022 11:04

It reminds me of the word martyr spelt like that. What about Marlena? Or Martha? Or Magda? Maggie?

EdgeOfACoin · 23/09/2022 12:04

I prefer Martina, but I love the name. I do think of Martina Navratilova and Martina Hingis, though.

Polish isn’t a trend.

OP, I see Martina/Martyna as more of a middle aged name, just because that’s the age range of every Martina/Martyna I’ve known. It’s a nice enough name, but not one most people would think of as ‘sweet’ in Britain. Not that’s a bad thing.

properdoughnut · 23/09/2022 12:49

Martina is nice. I've never seen Martyna before. Sounds nice. Not sure I'd assume they were "very sweet"

KirstenBlest · 23/09/2022 12:58

I know a Martyna. Not of UK heritage. People struggle with the spelling for some reason.

GlassDeli · 23/09/2022 14:04

I like Martina with this spelling. Martina Navratilova is a positive connection. The thread where most people didn't like it is from 2018 and trends do change.

Pinkywoo · 23/09/2022 14:12

I'd pronounce it mar tie na, rather than mar tee na unless told otherwise.

TraceyGerbil · 23/09/2022 14:23

I’d pronounce Martyna as Martin -ah, and Martina as Marteeeena. (Polish heritage, and “y” is pronounced as a short “I” in Polish.)

Yep,me too.

CoastalWave · 23/09/2022 14:26

I like Martina (If that's the same name, same sound)

She will spend her entire life telling people it's with a 'y' if you spell it that way. Please don't do that to her!

Thank you all for the honest and quick replies 🙂

It’s usually Martina here. Never been very popular although Martin has been.

I don’t especially like it, but there’s nothing wrong with it.
