Morwenna and Ruby

My husband and I have different styles and we have been trying to find some more names we both could like this past week.

I was pleasantly surprised when he suggested Morwenna. He found it in a book.

It does fit a little bit with names I really love (Agatha, Sabrina) due to its old fashioned but slightly mysterious image but it sounds modern enough to him to consider it (Sabrina is on our list too, Agatha has no chance as my husband dislikes it so much).

He also suggested Ruby and I am pleased too as it is not as trendy as many of the other names he likes but I feel like it is a bit "women in her 20s" (university age). Not that there is anything wrong with that but wondering if it would bother he if it is associated mainly with people older than her.

So what are your thoughts on Morwenna and Ruby?

We say mor-WENN-a.

Oh and I will post my husband's full list one of these days too when I get a chance, he forgot it at his brother's house after going there for dinner a few days ago.

Absolutely love Morwenna and it was on my list but DS was a boy so I couldn’t use it.
Ruby is quite nice but I know a few of them from 3 - 16 yrs old so more popular,

NuffSaidSam · 18/09/2022 14:06

I'm not keen on Morwenna, I just don't like the sound of it.

Ruby is fine, but was very popular maybe 10 years ago so feels a bit overused to me. I don't think it's that popular anymore though so unlikely to be one of five Ruby's in her class.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 18/09/2022 14:19

Ruby is fine imo. I don't hugely like Morwenna but know two - one goes by Mo, the other by Wenna.

SpaceJamtart · 18/09/2022 14:20

I like Morwenna
I am also in my early 20s and I have never known a girl my age called Ruby. It was around 80 in the name charts in the late 90s and early 2000s so not super common then.

UnconscionableSnacking · 18/09/2022 14:24

I LOVE Morwenna. I think it is such a beautiful, strong and interesting name. Sadly vetoed for my DD by my DH, sob.

Ruby is lovely too but I do know several of them, so if you are bothered by there being multiple Rubys in her class at school you might prefer something different.

(But fwiw there were several people with my name at school with me and it was absolutely fine)

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/09/2022 17:24

I like Morwenna and Sabrina a lot

Ruby is fine, but it’s been a bit overdone and is quite cutesy

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 18/09/2022 17:27

Morwenna was on our list as well. I know a Lowenna which is a beautiful name.

I know a lot of Ruby's so personally I would steer clear of that one.

Helgadaley · 18/09/2022 17:35

I love Morwenna. To me, Ruby sounds old fashioned. I once had an auntie Ruby who died in the 1950s so that's maybe why.

YennefersDress · 18/09/2022 17:42

I like Morwenna, makes me think of Cornwall and Poldark 😁

CaffiSaliMali · 18/09/2022 17:56

I love both Morwenna and Sabrina. Morwenna was a Welsh born Cornish saint. Lowenna is nice too and Eseld, which is Cornish for Iseult.

You can hear the Welsh pronunciation at: www.bbc.co.uk/wales/livinginwales/sites/howdoisay/names/index.shtml?m

I think in Cornwall Morwenna is pronounced with a non rolled r, like in Poldark.

There's also Morwen which is Welsh and Morven, which is Scottish which have a similar vibe.

MollyRover · 18/09/2022 18:14

Morwenna or Morwen are beautiful names. Ruby was no.2 on our list for DD1

HahahaBoomBoom · 18/09/2022 20:37

Love Morwenna! Morwenna Ruby is a nice name together too.

The Ruby’s I know are mid-late teens. Never met a Morwenna before.

HahahaBoomBoom · 18/09/2022 20:38

Also OP a I adore Agatha and am waiting for someone to take the plunge so that it can be more accepted/popular enough for me to use haha!

Smudges16 · 19/09/2022 08:31

I'd rather be called Ruby myself, so I vote Ruby.

Morwenna is a lot to shout across the park imo.

NCFT0922 · 19/09/2022 08:33

Morwenna is awful, sorry.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 19/09/2022 08:35

Morwenna is awful, sounds like a character in a new teen horror programme.

Ruby is lovely, but very popular around here.

pitterypattery00 · 19/09/2022 21:40

Morwenna is a bit too long for my tastes but I really like Merryn and Morven which have some similar sounds.

DramaAlpaca · 19/09/2022 23:25

I love both, but would probably pick Ruby of the two as I have a preference for short names - and I love rubies.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/09/2022 00:16

I quite like Morwenna. Reminds me of the character from Poldark who was married to that porcine old prick of a vicar. Never been more delighted to see a character die. Morwenna went on to live her best life.

DurdleSnore · 20/09/2022 07:34

I love Morwenna but to me I’ll always think of Poldark. I have a soft spot for Ruby but it’s very popular. I actually had it on my list but my DAD vetoed as he said, ‘nope, it’s a curry’! 🙄

MrsFionaCharming · 22/09/2022 18:40

I love Morwenna. Also Lowenna and Rowenna.

Not so keen on Ruby.

ChagSameachDoreen · 22/09/2022 18:44

Ruby is nice.

Morwenna is a strangely spooky name.

Mercurial123 · 22/09/2022 18:44

My Glaswegian aunt aged 80 is a Ruby, I love the name.

schoolsoutforever · 22/09/2022 19:49

I like Morwenna but love Morvern/Morven even more (but I am Scottish so I suppose I would). Ruby is a nice name but I have taught many Ruby’s over the years and I do think it’s a little dated now. That said, I also think you should go with what you love no matter how fashionable it is.

schoolsoutforever · 22/09/2022 19:50
