Middle names for Athena (Thea)?

Hi all,

You might have seen my previous post looking for a name with Thea in that doesn't include Dora and I think I've settled on Athena. I guess I should go for another Greek name as a middle name e.g. Cassandra but I am not Greek and my other daughter has no greek names. I like long lady-like names that can be shortened. I love names like:

  • Fern
  • Heather
  • Lillian (Lila but not Lily)
  • Rosaline (Rosa but not Rose)
  • Hazel
  • Elizabeth (Lizzie)
  • Diana (not my favourite)
  • Ava
  • Aurora
  • Miriam
ect.

All of these are in the top 150 though and I don't want a really common one.

I need two middle names that go with these:
Cora Eloisa Hope (her mum, me)
Isadora - Adora - Elodie Willow (her big sister)

Surname begins with N, part of a county in England, and ends in 'ton'. 2 syllables.

Thanks,
xxx Cora

If nothing is really standing out I'd go for Elizabeth. Timely for sure.

Mmm. But it's about to get a load more popular!

Athena doesn't have Thea in it.

Why not just call her Thea if that's the name you'll be using?
Or Theadosia (more correctly spelled Theodosia) if you need a formal name. It lends itself to the Thea abbreviation much better than Athena does.

Or Theoni, Alethea...

Anyway, for a middle name I would go with a name that has a classical ring to it:
Katherine and Margaret both have Greek origins.
Anastasia is Greek and also Russian.
Penelope and Philippa are both Greek.
Sophia is also Greek but not in a way that knocks you over the head.

Feminine names:
Olivia
Fenella
Susannah
Melisande
Francesca
Estelle

It's always been popular but it's also very timeless.

I'm biased though as it's my first name and my DD's middle name.

Elodie and willow are also quite popular names.

AdoraLovesCake · 14/09/2022 17:56

Yes. Estella is lovely

I think if you and your first daughter both have E middle names, go for another E one. I like patterns, it gives you a link.

purplemunkey · 14/09/2022 18:51

I agree with PP, Athena doesn’t have Thea in it. Althea or Anthea does though.

Kanaloa · 14/09/2022 18:53

If you like the name Thea I’d just use the name Thea. The Athena I know gets called Affie. Still like the name, but I’m not keen on Affie! Either way I’d just choose the name Thea since that’s the name you obviously love. Same with Lila/Lillian. Two different names.

Any middle name would go nicely though - I wouldn’t worry about finding another Greek name, and I don’t see the worry about it being popular. Middle names are hardly ever used so does it matter if it’s popular?

AdoraLovesCake · 14/09/2022 19:01

Thanks all.

I don't like Althea, it gives me athlete feeling which is not me. Anthea and Cythea feel to me like 70s names.

Thea is a name itself and a pretty one at that. Athena is pretentious for someone who isn't Greek.

MassiveSalad22 · 14/09/2022 19:07

Why does it have to go with your name? Sister I can kind of see although no-one outside the family will pay much attention to middle names.

Ellora would be a nice middle name. El sound and goes with Adora. I had a toy cat called Ellora!

LegoFiends · 14/09/2022 19:10

Thanks all.

@Junebughustle I know about Athena for a non-greek but i love the ancient greeks and others like it. I am wondering just Thea with was my original plan.

@MassiveSalad22 Ellora is lovely, thank you. I know it doesn't have to go with our names I just wanted to give people an idea of what names I like.

@LegoFiends Love Erin! Thanks for that suggestion :)

@gulliblestravels It would have to be Elizabeth, I have a personal connection with EliZabeth as a name and of course the Queen, may she rest in peace.

@felulageller Thank you, most of those names i really like.

I am thinking I will go with as a shorter list:

  1. Estella
  2. Miriam
  3. Heather
  4. Ava
  5. Elizabeth
  6. Rosa
  7. Fern
  8. Aurora (though its similair to DD1's first name but does that matter?)

Athena is beautiful. (Thea isn't) I wouldn't shorten Athena at all!

JamSandle · 14/09/2022 20:14

I quite like Athena Fern.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/09/2022 20:26

Athena Daphne Grace
Athena Chloe Grace
Athena Circe Grace
Athena Zoe Grace
Athena Rosa Celeste
Athena Ava Celeste
Athena Ava Katharine
Athena Rosa Katharine
Athena Ava Marianne
Athena Rosa Marianne
Athena Sylvie Katharine
Athena Lucy Katharine
Athena Lucy Celeste
Athena Grace Estella
Athena Faith Estella
Athena Grace Elizabeth
Athena Faith Elizabeth
Athena Ava Elizabeth

Athena Fern is nice but can’t see it in a set of three right now

Athena Marianne also nice - I think works better than Miriam

If you were happy to go with Hope after you, it would be a more unusual replacement for Grace

S25 · 02/10/2022 01:45

Athena Clarissa Fern

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 02/10/2022 18:21

I love Athena Fern

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 02/10/2022 18:21

Definitely shouldn't use a Greek middle name, it would be too much if you're not Greek
