Pria / Priya for white British baby girl

LG due in Jan. Struggling to find a name that I love, as much as her sister Orla's name. I keep coming back to Pria / Priya, but would it be unusual to use it without any Hindu/ Indian connection? Thinking of using Eve as a middle name.

I wouldn't.

MrsU2022 · 08/09/2022 20:21

Not sure it really goes with Orla to be honest!

Koifish · 08/09/2022 20:22

I have a close friend with a white British daughter called Priya! At first when she mentioned her daughter I did have the connotation however upon meeting her it’s just a very pretty name on a pretty girl.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 08/09/2022 20:23

It would be weird, yes

GreenEggsAndBabycham · 08/09/2022 20:23

Pia?
Freya?

But Priya would be a bit odd tbh.

Cheeselog · 08/09/2022 20:23

I wouldn’t. What about Thea, Pia, Leah, Ria?

lafado · 08/09/2022 20:24

Priya however you spell it, is a name associated with people with links to Asia. It would be extremely odd to name your child this.

I know a little white girl named preeya

SolarLanterns · 08/09/2022 20:25

It's beautiful.

dandelionthistle · 08/09/2022 20:26

Difficult one. Instinctively I would find it a little weird but I can't back that up with a logical argument and I think to some extent borrowing things from each other's cultures is a normal and good thing.

I don't think it's cultural appropriation because I don't think it diminishes the name's origins and it doesn't involve money.

I don't know what the name means though and potentially would change my view if it has a meaning of specific cultural significance.

Rinatinabina · 08/09/2022 20:29

i would assume she had Indian heritage and was white passing. But tbh it wouldn’t really bother me (I’m asian), I’d think it was just a nice name that her mum liked.

PotatoFamily · 08/09/2022 20:31

Go with Eve!

Eve and Orla is beautiful

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 08/09/2022 20:32

No.

Mossygreenchypre · 08/09/2022 20:33

Pick the name you love.
I think Priya is lovely.

SunshineAndFizz · 08/09/2022 20:33

I second Eve and Orla

ElephantePicante · 08/09/2022 20:34

No.

GoldenGorilla · 08/09/2022 20:34

I’d assume Asian heritage but white passing tbh, you may get a lot of questions about what your link to India is. But names do get adopted by other cultures over time, so I don’t think there’s anything actually wrong with doing it.
so….but weird but ok? ——-sits on fence——-

Georgeskitchen · 08/09/2022 20:35

Yoi don't have to ask anyones permission to call your child a particular name. There was an Indian girl at my school called Alison. Nobody batted an eyelid!!

Kanaloa · 08/09/2022 20:37

I probably wouldn’t to be honest. Same as I wouldn’t call a little white British boy Seo-jun or a little white British girl Sukhvinder. It would just be a bit odd and I think would create an expectation/open questions.

Mumspair1 · 08/09/2022 20:37

Nope. I'm Indian and you it be very odd to do that. You also don't want your child to spend her life explaining why that's her name. Tbh Priya might sound very unique but it's such a common name in the Indian culture. Like probably Mary or Bob.

Of course they didn't. It's not remotely the same thing Confused

PopcornParty · 08/09/2022 20:38

If u like the name priya call your baby priya who cares what other people think... it's a lovely name xx

ymemanresu · 08/09/2022 20:41

I love it. My daughter has a French name and in 15 years no one has ever asked if there is a French connection.

ymemanresu · 08/09/2022 20:41

Eta - there isn't!

ijustcouldntthinkofausername · 08/09/2022 20:42

Go with Eve ☺️
