What class do you associate Alfie with?

  1. If you're an insufferable snob and wannabe social climber yourself, then maybe
  2. None because I'm not in the 1) category.
How about you?
Wouldloveanother · 02/09/2022 09:47

Who cares?

Orangio · 02/09/2022 09:47

I don't understand the class system as we don't have it where I live (thank the heavens) but if you like Alfie, use it. Why be constrained by an outdated system designed to control people?

MuddlerInLaw · 02/09/2022 09:48

Cod working class. It’s the sort of name film stars or lead singers in globally adored bands can give their children, safe in the knowledge that while the name sounds down to earth, their nepo-baby will inherit the earth.

FayCarew · 02/09/2022 10:01

If you put Alfred on the BC, then it will be classless. You could also use Alfredo or Alfonso or something.
The MC Alfred I know gets called Alfred.

pinklavenders · 02/09/2022 10:26

Who cares? I hate this 'class' obsession in the Uk.

I don't like Alfie at all btw

georgarina · 02/09/2022 10:30

Yes and no - it's a bit of a Burberry - I associate it with both ends of the spectrum.

Saucery · 02/09/2022 10:32

It’s a perfectly nice name. A young Michael Caine jumps to mind when I hear it, but I’m quite Old and a YMC isn’t a bad thing anyway.

Afterfire · 02/09/2022 10:37

It’s short for Alfred isn’t it which is quite posh.

CPL593H · 02/09/2022 10:48

Alfred often nn Alfie was incredibly popular at the end of the 19th century, across the spectrum. Since it came out of the 100 year sojourn in the wilderness names usually have, so lovely hearing it as it has a very dear association for me with one of the 19th C contingent. He was most definitely an Alfie (only becoming Alfred when in trouble, according to him)

Longwinded way of saying who gives a stuff what "class" it is now meant to belong to. I'd make it officially Alfred, so you have something to use when he's in trouble Grin

Alfred is posh Grin

Fivebeanchilli · 02/09/2022 11:07

Fairly classless because it's pretty bland (which isn't a criticism. If you like that sort of name though it's going to be relatively classless).
Fits with James / George / Thomas etc.

RestingMurderousFace · 02/09/2022 11:09

I have a dog called Alfie. Alfred when he’s being a dick.

HTH. 😁

Cheeselog · 02/09/2022 11:10

I know two young Alfies. One’s parents are a SAHM/on benefits and a bricklayer, the other one’s parents are both lawyers.

I do think it is more WC to give Alfie/a nickname as the name on the birth certificate, though I was surprised that Harry and Meghan put Archie on the BC not Archibald, so maybe it’s changing.

knittingaddict · 02/09/2022 11:10

Any class can have an Alfie. One of our pets was an Alfie and we are lower middle class. 😀

Libre2 · 02/09/2022 11:12

Yes

But Meghan isn't exactly 'classy' is she?!

mogwa · 02/09/2022 11:29

I don't like it, but it's incredibly popular, and has been for years, so I'd assume it's used by people of different socio-economic groups.

Not being British I wouldn’t expect her to appreciate the intricacies of the British class system, no. But presumably the name was mutually agreed by the two of them. I guess no one is going to mistake him for WC whatever his name!

A few of my friends have Alfies. They’re mostly working class although one family is maybe middle class? I’m not great at the class system. I only know the working class families are working class because in my hometown there’s a lot of pride about being working class so people tend to discuss it a lot.

RuthW · 02/09/2022 12:10

Alfie, yes

Alfred or similar is classless and lovely

OriginalUsername2 · 02/09/2022 12:15

It depends what tone of voice you say it in. Don’t screech it across the playground, add “darling” and you’re good 👍🏻😂

FrownedUpon · 02/09/2022 12:19

Yes

Then a good proportion of them will be MC.

Actual WC people don't need to prove and discuss it.

PurpleWisteria · 02/09/2022 12:22

The only Alfies I know are dogs. A westie and a cockerpoo.
