What class do you associate Alfie with?

I do think it is more WC to give Alfie/a nickname as the name on the birth certificate, though I was surprised that Harry and Meghan put Archie on the BC

But Meghan isn't exactly 'classy' is she?!

No, she only married a prince 😂can you get more 'classy'?

FayCarew · 02/09/2022 12:45

Would you say that all wives of princes are classy, @thisisit77 ?

Alfie peaked about 11 years ago.

pinklavenders · 02/09/2022 12:49

Marrying someone does not make you classy!

FayCarew · 02/09/2022 12:50

Not all princes are classy.

MsMariaReynolds · 02/09/2022 12:51

Best way to see if a name is regarded as working-class is to create a mumsnet thread asking for general opinions on a name.

If numerous replies just say ‘Awful.’ with no explanation as to why then you know it’s probably regarded as working-class

Redqueenheart · 02/09/2022 12:58

It depends it can be also associated to the London lovies creative types, as in Alfie Allen and Alfie Goffey.

I prefer Alfred to be honest.

FayCarew · 02/09/2022 13:17

Alfie Boe. He and AA and AG were named before Alfie was a top 10 name, and names tend to move down the social strata.

Sandysandwich · 02/09/2022 14:02

I don't associate it with class, its a plain standard name, too popular to be tied to a class.

Ilikecheeseontoast · 02/09/2022 14:05

Alfie, Albie, Archie are all awful in my opinion. No idea what class though?? Don’t really care either.

pinklavenders · 02/09/2022 14:46

I agree that Alfie, Archie, Albie are pretty awful names. But I hate the class argument!

TheWayoftheLeaf · 02/09/2022 14:54

No. Alfie has been for a long time upper class but this name has now become popular among middle and working class ppl. So I don't think it points to any class really.

If you're worried don't be. People can figure out someone's 'class' within about 20 minutes so it
Doesn't really matter.

Not all princes are classy.

Exactly some - which Harry isn't - are no.....

Anyway back to the topic of this thread.

They are nicknames.

I expect the person to have a full name e.g. Alfred, Albert, Archibald.

Then again certain groups of US citizens frequently use last names as first names.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/09/2022 19:10

It's just very widely used.

I guess it was a hipster name originally and spread out.

pinklavenders · 02/09/2022 20:11

Why don't you ask whether people like Alfie? Probably a lot won't.

Asking about 'class' is confusing and irrelevant to many.

bloominglovelyorange · 02/09/2022 20:16

Classless name. I like it

AceSpades54321 · 02/09/2022 22:48

Being brutally honest (sorry) Alfie sounds chavvy to me 🤷‍♀️

ChagSameachDoreen · 03/09/2022 09:56

Alfie is to the 2010s what Reggie is today. Chosen by working class parents who thing they're 'ard.

Rosiethecat15 · 03/09/2022 09:59

If I heard Alfie I'd just think "Oh it's another Alfie".

Change123today · 03/09/2022 10:04

It’s just a name. I don’t really think of it either way.

I know 2 Alfie’s and parents one is just a normal family (mums a nurse Dad works in council) & the other Dad is a hedge fund manager!

The first is called Alfred on his BC and the other is Alfie on BC.

HereIfYouNeedMe · 03/09/2022 10:16

What a strange question.

IsThePopeCatholic · 03/09/2022 10:17

I think it is faux working class. Inverted snobbery name. I don’t like it.

Claricethecat45 · 03/09/2022 10:18

I have 2 nephews aged 15 and 7 both Alfies. Named on birth cert as Alfie, no Alfred's or such like

The 7 year old has 3 others in his year group; The 15 year old has a few in his also, and we were discussing this recently. Neither of them mind being amongst several.

I like the name for a Budgie or other small pet....and know 2 dogs and 2 cats also called Alfie. It is a very popular name.

Comedycook · 03/09/2022 10:21

The name Alfie is quite cute...I imagine an Alfies parents as being a tradesman dad and a beautician mum who have a grey crushed velvet sofa. Nothing wrong with that by the way. Yeah, it's generally wc but if a posh family had an Alfie I wouldn't be too surprised.

HappyBinosaur · 03/09/2022 10:23

Why on earth does it matter? If you like the name then use it!
Also, there is nothing wrong with being or sounding working class. This stupid idea that working class = chavvy is ridiculous (and I hate the word chavvy!)
