Expecting a boy in early December, these are the boys names DH and I have come up with between us and the reasons why one or other of us is reluctant.
Thoughts on our concerns and alternative suggestions would be appreciated.

Luke (Sounds like Lou when said next to our surname beginning with C)
Dominic (MIL will say Dommy!)
Nathan (DH thinks its a bit "soft")
Ewan (Worry its strongly associated with Scotland and we have no Scottish roots)
Harrison (I think it's a bit trendy / beginning to date)

Thanks!

Luke and Nathan for me. Sorry, I don’t like the others , especially Harrison

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/08/2022 20:00

Does Lucas work better than Luke?

I like Nathaniel, nn Nat or Nate. Would Nate sound more boyish to your DH?

I don’t think you have to be Scottish to use Ewan. (Although it always makes me think of sheep.)

I think Harrison will really date

Otherwise… Owen, Gawain, Ethan, Daniel nn Dan, Joel, Jerome, Jared, Zachery nn Zach, Benedict nn Ben, Nicholas nn Nick, Franklin nn Frank, Max, Joss, Levi, Elijah / Elisha nn Eli

Luke - nice but not with the surname
Dominic - Don't like Dom or Dommy
Nathan - a bit downmarket
Ewan - fine other than it might get Euan
Harrison - Harry is better

I like Luke and Euan.
Nathaniel has probably been suggested already, but I'm not keen.

Suggestions:
Paul
John
Evan
Jeremy
George

Go for Dominic and tell your MIL his name isn't Dommy.

MerryChristmasToYou · 27/08/2022 01:03

Dominic will run into the surname, and don't use it if your surname is Cummings

Luke (Sounds like Lou when said next to our surname beginning with C)
Dominic (MIL will say Dommy!)
Ewan (Worry its strongly associated with Scotland and we have no Scottish roots)

These are non-issues!

Thanks for the replies
I think Lucas has a different vibe to Luke and we like Luke but it really doesn't work with our C surname, so think it's discounted. Dominic is OK with the C surname (which isn't Cummings!) I think because it's a longer name.
@Mumofgirls2017 i like a lot of your suggestions most have been vetoed by DH. Considering Liam as a middle name. Really like Callum but not sure about the alliteration.
Good to see there isn't a strong association with Ewan / Euan being a Scottish name.

Lucas, or Luca, won't work because it will get shortened to Luke. (cue lots of people posting that they know 20 million Lucases and Lucas and none are ever, ever, called Luke). Surname might be Cooper so Luke/Lucas Cooper will sound like Loo Cooper or Lucre Scooper.

Calum Cropper is a no from me.
Dominic Carter sounds like Domini Carter

You could use Liam as a first name perhaps.

KirstenBlest · 27/08/2022 11:50

Every Dominic I know is Dom.

Ewan would be my pick from your list but check how it goes with the surname.
Ewan Campbell sounds nice, but kids might pick up on the -wan C- in the middle. Sorry.

DramaAlpaca · 28/08/2022 03:08

Nice list. Rule out any names either you or your other half are concerned about for any reason and you'll find the right one.
