Looking for a saint name for next baby! For a girl we have picked Helena and Marina, (we love both, have already posted a thread about this and got lovely feedback, so decided if baby is a girl just to see which names she suits most and save the other name for a potential future daughter!)

For a boy, my husband has decided he loves Ignatius. Which was unexpected! It was suggested on another thread where I asked about saints names for boys and he took a liking to it.

Other names that were suggested that we liked were Moses, Cassian, Fabian.

Was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on Ignatius? Does it seem OTT - is it a bit Jacob Rees Mogg? (DH isn't British and doesn't see any issue with the name, but I feel British people might feel differently. While we don't live in the UK, we still have family there and will be returning every so often, children will be British citizens so British opinions on the name are definitely important!)

He likes nickname Iggy which I feel is the only natural shortening anyway.

It's quite a big name. I had a cousin called Ignatius/Iggy who changed his name to Tom. That's not to say your son wouldn't love it though.

I prefer the other three names you list: Moses, Cassian, Fabian

Big name to carry off. What if he’s tiny and low key he will bloody hate it.

It’s a nice name imo. Nobody will ever call him Ignatius though, Iggy or Nate just trip off the tongue more easily.

Ok, so you did ask. But the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title was JRM. So for that reason it's a no from me.

My youngest has an unusual name. During the holidays he went to lots of clubs. They all knew his name the next session.. If he had been one of a few they wouldn't..

I don't see what size has to do with it. It's ok but will probably be shortened.

I actually just Googled JRM's children's names and I actually think Ignatius is even more out there than most of his children's names. Except maybe Sixtus 😂

I love your girls names but if I saw a boy called Ignatius I would probably think his parents were pretentious twits, sorry! I reckon you should go with what you love though. Who cares what anyone else thinks.

Agree, I do too. Not at all too prententious and fairly common here.

I think it's definitely a bold name. It goes against the current trends for boy's names in the UK - short, nicknamey names like Alfie and Jack. So I can see it being polarising. But I think it's usable, especially if you live in a reasonably multicultural area.

Every time I come across a name like Ignatius or Aloysius, it's usually an elderly Irish man who was so named because of the saint.

I would assume you were very committed Catholics with that name. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

You have to go pretty far down the Google search page to find a thing that is not about st Ignatius of Loyola or about a school named after him.

Having said that Iggy and Nate are great nick names.

Good nicknames but I don't know, I just can't imagine a 42 year old accountant called that. It's not too out there if you love it though, just be ready for the eyebrow raises.

Think about your surname too, there are probably a few which might sound weird with such a 'fancy' first name.

@DaisyJoy1 haha, I've just googled as well - I genuinely thought Ignatius was actually one of his kids names 😅. To be fair is daughter's name is pretty sensible, if quite long.

Seriously though, if you like it I'd go for it. I do prefer Nate as a nickname though, I feel that would age better than Iggy which is fine for a baby/child but maybe not on an adult.

I’m not a fan of Ignatius, and I’m generally a fan of longer boys names (I love Aloysius for example). It does seem very Jacob Rees Mogg - which was feedback I got about Aloysius and it was enough to put me off using the name, as that’s not the impression I want to create. I do like Ignacio, and Nacho as a nickname but then I was huge Nacho fan in Better Call Saul.

I love all your other boys names though I’d assume a Moses came from a very devout family.

In lreland we come across Iggy at times but l think most people would see lgnacious as an old priests name or something.
Edmund lgnacious Rice was the founder of the Christian Brothers Schools here and while he was a good man the schools got a reputation for severe corporal punishment etc so not too well looked on now.
A aints name here that is a bit unusual in children is Senan which l love.

Definitely not to my taste and made me think of the word ignoramus, Ignacio as suggested is a bit better but I do agree with pp I would probably assume parents were a bit pretentious if I met a child with the name. I love the name Ptolemy which I would put in a similar ball park but would never use it because it just feel a bit too try hard and not all kids are going to want to have to work to pull off such a distinctive name. That said at least it has nickname options with Iggy or Nate, Nate is a fairly usual name if your son wants to blend in or Iggy a bit more cool if he suits it.

Popular in Eastern European countries and catholic ones for people over 40. I’d group it with names like Thaddeus Francis, Stefan etc. Due a come back? No it will never be mainstream. But has a standard pronunciation and good nickname potential. I would assume you’d named him for a grandparent and it’s pretentious but not cringingly so.

My first thought is Ignatius J Reilly in the cult classic A Confederacy of Dunces. Worth looking up as I wouldn’t be the only one just so you understand the reference. But I definitely wouldn’t let that hold you back as it’s so niche and I quite like the name.

Never heard it before but I think it sounds good, especially with the history behind the name. A solid, strong name for a boy.

Anything that puts people in mind even vagueley of Rees Mogg absoloutely to be avoided at all costs, imo.

Aww that’s was my dad’s name ! Large Irish Catholic family where most of them were named after saints . My son has it as a middle name too. Dad’s name was shortened to Nachi 😍 his brother was Gabriel .
