Edith or Edie/Eadie?

Due in 4 weeks and we have no name! The only name me and DH keep coming back to is Edith/Edie. We both love Edie but not sure if we should officially name her Edith on the birth certificate so that she has more options as Edie sounds quite nicknamey to me? Would you name your daughter Edith or Edie?

A friend suggested just calling her Edie but spelling it “Eadie” so people don’t think her name is pronounced like Eddie. But I think Eadie looks really strange?

Any thoughts please?

Love Edie. Cannot stand Edith, to me it’s just frumpy.

My niece is a teenage Edie.
I love the name but she finds it very frustrating how many people call her either Eddie or Evie, or spell it wrong.
So perhaps Edith is a better option.
I don't like Eadie at all. Looks weird.

I think of Ediths Cavell , Wharton and Edie Sedgwick; not altogether happy associations but striking and talented.

Normally I don't like diminutives on the birth certificate, but I much prefer Edie to Edith.

Like Edie - dislike Edith. To me it sounds like an old woman who lives next door (but then I'm not in to Granny Chic names....)

Edith nickname Edie is lovely and also NOBODY would have trouble pronouncing Edie. No need to spell it wrong. Edie is a well known and popular name, it’s not like people won’t have heard it before and be confused?

@DaisyJoy1 , you would be surprised. Don't assume that just because you wouldn't that nobody else would.

At least one pp has said she knows an Edie who gets called Eddie.

My little girl is just Edie, not Edith, I love it! We’ve had a couple of people call her Eddie - at the doctors etc, but not many, I just assume they don’t read it properly!

The natural pronunciation of Edie is Eddie unless you know it is a diminutive of Edith. Having said that it isn't much in the way of education to learn a different pronunciation.

No it isn't. The single consonant 'd' suggests that the first letter is a long sound. In Eddie, the double consonant makes the first letter a short 'e' sound.

Edit - Ed it (short e)

So if I see Ed-ie my brain thinks Ed (short e).
