Struggling to find a name we agree on after having an easy time with Euan. Leading contender is Angus, but I'm not completely sold on it

Euan and Evan would be ridiculous. The names look so similar written by hand, and they are both forms of John

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2022 14:59

I'd also not mix names that are obviously from different languages. I think Euan and Rhys or Tadhg jar a bit, and neither Rhys nor Tadhg sound great outside their native tongues.

Thank you! We don't have any ties to Wales or Ireland so it wouldn't feel right to have a name from there, especially since two of the three of us have very Scottish names and all of us share a Mac surname!

My DP has vetoed anything beginning with M add they don't like the alliteration, which is a shame as I do like Magnus and Murray.

Andrew, Fraser, Callum, Cameron, Oran all out because of family members. Rory I have an irrational dislike of.

Innes and Lachlan are on my list. Every so often I worry that Lachlan sounds a bit like lacking when it's pronounced with an English accent (and we're currently in England). Fergus I like, but DP pointed out it's still a -gus name so not that different from Angys. Outside of Scottish names I do really like Adam.

I think I just can't get over Angus as an old man's name!

I was hoping for a DD purely because I knew we were going to struggle with names for a DS! For DP they were pretty much split 50:50 between Euan and Angus, but I'll feel a bit sad for the second if I can't find a name I love as much as I do Euan.

In my (mild) defence my grandad was called Angus, so despite working with some significantly younger ones over the years it is still the main association in my head! Maybe I just need to get people to post pictures of people called Angus below the age of 70 so I'll get over it.

Tam I like but I thought they'd hate me for the inevitable explanation of why it really was Tam and not Tom. Kester I don't think is actually Scottish but I do like it, and Kes is one of the few nick names I wouldn't mind. I prefer names that can't be shortened, and I'm a bit worried if the Gus potential with Angus.

I think I might just associate things too much - I couldn't have a Donald without singing "where's your trousers" every time (never mind the trump association), Lorne will always be a type of sausage and Gillies a weird spelling of the shoes.

I am in Scotland and every Angus I have met has been young, so I don't have the old man association. In my head Angus is more the wee tousle headed rugby playing outdoorsy boys I have encountered.

AliBaliBears · 24/08/2022 20:35

I agree with @Luredbyapomegranate that there are some great Scottish boys names. I love PPs suggestion of Struan but I think it is too close in sound to Euan to work for brothers. But almost all of the other names sound great with Euan...

Euan and Innes
Euan and Angus
Euan and Fraser
Euan and Ross.
Etc etc .... They all sound great together.

I'd be reluctant to use Lachlan if you are in England as the first syllable it will inevitably be pronounced Lock or Lack rather than Loch.

Fleur405 · 24/08/2022 20:42

Oh I love Angus. I know one baby and one almost 3 year old and I don’t think of it as an old man’s name at all.

I also like Lachlan a lot but would not sure I could cope with pronunciation if I lived in England!

what about Alexander?
