Theodore/Theo

Is it ok to use this name when close family child is called Teddy? Teddy is the full name and not a diminutive.

We wouldn’t want to use Teddy as a nickname, and would be known as Theo.

What do people think? I change my mind on hourly basis but also don’t have any other favourite names right now. Thanks very much!

It is by far the most popular boy's name in England and Wales.

It's been overused to the point of being really dull.

Cousins Teddy and Theo are fine, but not if they are both Theodore Samesurname.

Hi @Mynewusersame i am of the view that a parent name their child whatever they want. If you love the name Theo/Theodore then give that name to your child. If your friend is upset that it’s too similar to Teddy, she could always change her child’s name.

naming your child is one of the hardest, most important and privileged things you could do. You have to get it right. Don’t feel pressure from others.

Thanks both! Also aware is v common right now but ok with that and hoping because it’s a generally nice and inoffensive name… (I’m an 80s baby with a Laura/Lauren/Jennifer type name). I still have a couple of months to find another favourite so will keep an eye on these boards but it’s been top of my “list” for years.

absolutely fine to use Theo/dore if cousin called Teddy..

ANUsernam · 24/08/2022 13:08

I can't see a problem with this. Though I know Teddy is used as a diminutive for Theodore, personally I associate it more with Edward.

FleursSechees · 24/08/2022 13:09

It's absolutely fine, as you said you won't be nicknaming the child "Teddy" or "Ted".

Also, don't worry about the PP who said it's "too popular" now. If you love the name, use it!
I've always adored the name Theodore since I was a little girl, so will be using it regardless of how "popular" it's become.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/08/2022 13:55

Of course it’s totally fine

You aren’t using Teddy so it’s irrelevant

TwoNightStand · 24/08/2022 14:00

Absolutely fine to use and Theo is lovely.

Mynewusersame · 24/08/2022 14:12

Thanks all. Really helpful to hear other views and reassurance. There is still time for me to fall in love with another name but good to know that it seems acceptable to use if I don’t 🙂
I also like the name Edward but felt that was actually even closer to Ted/dy like you said @ANUsernam .
Naming is hard when so many people around us already have had their children. Lots of lovely names already taken!
