Thoughts on Lennard / Leonard as a name?

DW and I are having hypothetical discussions about what to name the next baby if it’s a boy (too early to know yet). I really like Lennard / Leonard, with either Len or Lenny as a nickname. To me it feels literary, unusual and distinguished with no risk of having a sudden surge in popularity and becoming the new Arlo / Milo. She’s not keen. Feels it’s a bit old fashioned in a grandpa who worked down the pit with a flat cap and a bag of chips for tea way (we both had grandpas that came from this kind of background so we can make these jokes).

Says she’s going to sit with it and see if it grows on her.

Wondering what other people’s associations are with it, given that hers and mine are quite different?

She’ll be Stella or Sylvia if a girl

I don't really associate anything with Leonard. I guess I do slightly think Grandpa name, but I also would think it sweet on a baby - it's that right era that enough time has passed now to be suitable to come round again for little ones. Love Lenny for short. Would probably prefer the Lennard spelling myself.

My association is terrible, personal so I can't be objective. The literary association is of of mice and men...not sure I would like that one either.

GiantCheeseMonster · 22/08/2022 17:58

Lenny makes me think Of Mice And Men. I’d go Lawrence personally. I feel it’s a similar vibe but a nicer name.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/08/2022 17:59

How about Lenworth? (Lenny Henry's real name.)

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 22/08/2022 18:29

I'd think, Big Bang Theory, Leonard Cohen, the guy Ria had an affair with in Butterflies and Leonard Rossiter.

Of course Lennard is a proper name!

I know several.

Define several, a name pretty much unheard of yet you know several?

user1492757084 · 22/08/2022 18:48

Lennard and Leonard are fine names.
Lenny is cute in a sweet mobster kind of way.

pinklavenders · 22/08/2022 19:03

Lennard was given 14 times as a first name in 2017 alone. So it's not that unusual that I know several - one aged 5 and two in their 20s.

TitInATrance · 22/08/2022 19:05

Leonard Cohen, which makes me like it. I’m not keen on the other spelling.

Hobbesmanc · 22/08/2022 19:08

I think Len is still a bit of Nigel name. Think Len from strictly. Older grumpy white man.

But like Lawrence and Bernard I can see it following the Alfie Archie path.

The girls names are very pretty.

pearandsausage · 22/08/2022 19:12

Love it. Was going to call DC2 if but turns out she's a girl!

BalloonSlayer · 22/08/2022 19:15

When I see Lennard I think of the guy who played Grandad in Only Fools and Horses.

Ziggyisthebestdogintheworld · 22/08/2022 19:21

My grandad was a Leonard-he went by len
its an amazing name and if I had another boy,I’d call him this
its my sons middle name (in honour of him) as it was ‘old fashioned’ back in 1998 when I had him

SundayTeatime · 22/08/2022 19:27

Leonard, not Lennard.
I’m not wildly keen, but could come round to it. and I do think of Of Mice and Men. I quite like Lenny.
Your girl names are great.

RedRiverShore2 · 22/08/2022 19:33

Leonard is a lovely name but I am a fan of Leonard Cohen so may be biased

Kite22 · 22/08/2022 19:41

Not particularly to my taste, but fits in with all the other 'old man names' that have become popular over the last 7 or 8 years.

Never seen it spelled any way other than Leonard though, so would definitely use that spelling if you do choose it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/08/2022 20:01

Always reminds me of this guy ❤️

I know a toddler Leonard (Lenny) and whilst I was surprised when I first heard it, it really suits him!

Orphlids · 22/08/2022 20:51

I rather like the name Leonard. I will always associate it with Leonard Cohen, who wrote some of the most beautiful poetry and lyrics of recent years. I prefer that spelling. Lenny is a good nn.

I like your girl’s names, particularly Stella. I find Stella extremely chic, and not at all “chavy” as mentioned by a PP.

godmum56 · 22/08/2022 20:53

Lynnard? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynyrd_Skynyrd

lrosey · 22/08/2022 20:59

People will 100% pass judgement if you name a child Stella. Both growing up and when they are an adult, job interviews etc. Sad but it’s true.

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/08/2022 21:07

I love Stella and Sylvia .

What judgement would that be? It’s very popular.

Skelligsfeathers · 22/08/2022 21:36

Of mice and men for me sorry.
It's not a great name.
