Are there any names that you just can't imagine on a baby?

Each to their own but I just can't picture a baby Frank. It seems such a harsh sounding adult name for a baby especially a newborn yet there have obviously been a lot of baby Franks but somehow I have a mental block when picturing it.

Does anyone else feel this way about a name?

Granny names are popular now but I still can’t imagine a baby Ivy or Elsie. Less popular granny names (but still rising in popularity) are Margaret and Dorothy. 60s and 70s names aren’t popular right now but then again, I didn’t think Ivy and Elsie would be in the top 15!

These threads are always just my baby name list.
Ds has three names. All of them have been mentioned here
If he had been a girl, he would have probably been :
Nora Margareta Wyn

The names you are all calling your children now, think Florence, Dorothy ,Edith , Constance Edward , Alfred were the names of my great aunts and uncles. The thought of calling your child any of those names by my generation was laughable. Names many of you are mentioning , were my contemporaries. We were all little children once and our names obviously suited us. I think there were 4 Kevins in my class and loads of Susan's Sharon's and Tracy's.
Our parents generation were Barbaras Audrey's Jean's. I see they are starting to make a come back. We have a little Colin and Ray in our local nursery. I haven't met a Brian yet.

Ah yes, Moira. I’m with the narrator of Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love when she says ‘Moira. What an awful name’

I know it’s coming back into fashion but I’ve never been keen on Olive either.

DH has (non-English) friends who called their baby Brian. That took me by surprise when I heard it.

I have uncles called Kevin and Derek and I've often tried to picture my grandparents lovingly choosing those names for their precious newborns!

Frank was our second choice for DS2. Barry and Gary are due a comeback, surely?

user1477391263 · 02/09/2022 21:46

I rather like Moira. It's basically the "Anglicized" spelling of the Irish name Maire, I think? I think it will make a comeback soon.

GlassDeli · 02/09/2022 23:24

I like Frank, Brian, Martin, Susan, Deborah, Lorraine. I think they could make a successful comeback quite soon. Possibly also Vanessa, Maria, Rachel, Helen, John, Walter, Mark, Arnold.

On the other hand, Gerald, Wayne, Bruce, Shane, Nigel, Glen, Janet, Patricia, Michelle, Kim, Bernadette and Donna won't be back any time soon IMO.

ScruffMuffin · 02/09/2022 23:34

I know children called Martin, Rachel, Susannah, Mary and Melanie. Those seemed very old-fashioned a few years back, but they're creeping back in.

QueSyrahSyrah · 02/09/2022 23:37

We watched ET tonight, so I'm going to throw in 'Gert' as in Gertrude I assume. I do quite like it though... it's, erm, solid.

In my new Year 2 class that are coming up, I have an Alan.

A 6 year old Alan 🥰 It's kind of growing on me!
