What are your thoughts on Otto, Rory or Xavier (zav-ee-ah) as boys names? Struggling to pick my favourite!

I like Xavier !

Rory has too many R's (I have the same gripe with Aurora, it feels like trying to speak with your mouth full).

Otto, I just find it too simple and boring. Otis is a bit better.

But Xavier is the best by far for me !

Zonder · 16/08/2022 02:38

Xavier is really pretentious if you're not french imo. Otto is a bit try-hard. Rory is nice and solid.

pounchill · 16/08/2022 02:43

Rory is aweful to me, cute name but can't imagine sending older kids to school with that name. But really doesn't matter what anyone thinks, there's so many weird names that are odd to start with then are so lovely and suit the child perfectly

Rory

Xavier only works if you have a grand / slightly exotic surname. If your last name is say Cooper or Roberts it just sounds too try hard.

Otto is the same. I love it but again, it could be pretentious in the ‘wrong’ hands.

Rory is just awful.

Beansí · 16/08/2022 14:47

Otto just be because I used to have a boxer dog called Otto and he was a gentle soul.

AliBaliBears · 16/08/2022 15:43

Really like Rory. I'm Scottish and so in my accent it has a strong r pronunciation which I like.

I like Xavier but from this thread it's clear pronunciation could be an issue as there's no one correct way to say it. FWIW I would say 'zay-vee-er'.

I'm not keen on Otto.

Titsflyingsouth · 16/08/2022 15:55

Not keen on any tbh...

Rory is a nightmare for anyone with a speech issue to say.

All the Otto's I have known have been cats or dogs.

Xavier just feels too 'try hard' for me.

If forced at gunpoint, I'd probably opt for Xavier. But I think there are nicer names out there. Just my personal opinion. 🤷🏻‍♀️

pinklavenders · 16/08/2022 16:35

I know several adults who struggle with their Rs and Rory is the worst name for them - worse than Rupert!

Xavier is the best option!

Hobeau · 16/08/2022 16:36

I like Otto.

Ditto Zav-ee-ay.

As PP have said, I'd avoid Wrorwy.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 16/08/2022 16:37

Love Rory. I wish I'd pushed for it more. Would have suited DS2 so badly.

Angelicapickles1 · 16/08/2022 16:44

Xavier pronounced Zav ee uh was my pick for a boy if I had a second son but we had DD. I love it and like that's it an unusual initial.

TheMadGardener · 16/08/2022 16:51

Teacher here. Never taught an Otto so it might be good if you want something unique. We have a Rory at school at the moment and he's absolutely delightful. Used to teach a Xavier who was NOT delightful!! My choice out of those 3 would be Rory.

KirstenBlest · 16/08/2022 17:53

Otto is not much more unusual than Xavier, but I too think that Otto is a bit of a pet's name. I dislike Otis.
Xavier seems a Catholic name to me, but that's not necessarily an issue.
Rory is by far the most popular, and there are so many R names around now that they seem a bit samey

ofwarren · 16/08/2022 17:57

Definitely Rory
Xavier will get mispronounced and Otto reminds me of this guy

Rory, Otto or Xavier
sonjadog · 16/08/2022 17:58

My dog was called Otto. He was a beautiful dog and a kindly soul. I would go for it or for Rory. I am Irish though, so Rory sounds normal to me. Not keen on Xavier.

dannydyerismydad · 16/08/2022 18:01

Growing up my best friend's dad was called Otto. I've never heard the name since.

He was a lovely man (and also very successful). It's a great name.

LadyEloise1 · 16/08/2022 18:27

Rory
I dislike the other two.
