5+3 with DC2. Early days but it took FOREVER to decide DD’s name! We couldn’t settle on anything. Here’s my current (short) list for boys and girls - please be honest! Surname ends is 2 syllables, begins with M and ends in ‘uh’ sound (like Miller).

Girls

  1. Willow

  2. Teaghan

  3. Poppy

  4. Brooke

  5. George

  6. Jack

  7. Leo

  8. Frank

All the boys' names are fine. My favourite would be Leo.

Willow is nice. I personally find Poppy a bit little-girly, but it's fine. Brooke is ok.

Teaghan is a bit of a mismatch with the others - what is going on with the spelling/pronunciation for this? I've seen Teagan before but the extra h seems a bit random (in Irish, it would mean the gh was silent?)

Wouldloveanother · 13/08/2022 09:49

The pronunciation would be Tee-gun. I had a friend at primary school called this, I just love the name! That’s how she spelled hers.

applegrumbles · 13/08/2022 09:56

That spelling and pronunciation don’t really make sense, sorry.

AboutDamnThyme · 13/08/2022 10:00

Not wild on any of the girls name tbh but backed into a corner Willow and Teaghan are okay. I'd probably spell it Tegan though...partly because it's easier but also because that's how my favourite Dr Who companion spelt it back in the 80s!

Of the boys I like Leo, and don't mind Frank, although it would drive me up the wall if people resorted to Frankie!

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/08/2022 10:08

All your boys names are nice

1 - Frank - getting popular but not overused yet, I prefer it short for Franklin or Francis personally.

2 - George overused but a classic

3 - Leo - It's nice but I wouldn't use it. It's really of the moment, he'll be in a class full of Leos and Theos

4 - Jack - it's OK but don't use it. It's been done absolutely to death.

I don't like your girl's names much sorry - Brooke is OK if a bit low rent, Poppy and Willow are drippy, and Tegan is is quite harsh with either pronunciation. I understand you want to spell it Teaghan to get it said a particularly way it just makes it fall into the younique spelling of names which is just naff and people do tend to Make Assumptions about kids with names like that.

Wouldloveanother · 13/08/2022 10:15

Thanks everyone. I’m really surprised - I knew Teaghan was unusual but I didn’t think it fell into the realms of ‘made up’ - i think of it as a proper name but just unusual as it’s Irish.

I think some names are a bit tricky as they describe attributes or traits and there’s a potential that your child will be the opposite. I’d put willow in that category (also things like Grace, prudence, Raven, charity)
I think your names are fine. Personally frank and Brooke aren’t favourites

perimenofertility · 13/08/2022 10:43

Willow and Poppy both very pretty, I love "nature" names (though not keen on Brooke). Teaghan, to me it feels a bit of a certain time, which would fit with you having a school friend with the same name.
George and Jack seem very popular, both solid classic names, just consider whether popularity bothers you. Leo, really like it but personally prefer Leon. Frank - love it.

SycamoreTall · 13/08/2022 10:46

Teaghan isn't really an Irish name, though, that's the issue. Teagan is a surname (I think?). Teaghan isn't anything.

These names became used outside Ireland as Irish-ish names.

SycamoreTall · 13/08/2022 10:48

And Tegan is Welsh for "toy" I think - most people with the name are Australian for some reason, including the Doctor Who character!

I’m okay with that, I don’t get too hung up on the meaning. I just like names that ‘sound’ nice.

Fair enough - that's totally your prerogative!

DuchessOfSausage · 13/08/2022 11:41

Willow - might not suit a chubby person
Teaghan - Tea Gun, dislike it
Poppy - ok
Brooke - not keen, nice as a surname

George - fine, very popular
Jack - it's been very popular for decades
Leo - nice but the Theo trend will date it
Frank - my least favourite, but ok

The boys' names are solid and traditional, but the girls' names are a bit twee or not traditional. Why the difference?

Wouldloveanother · 13/08/2022 11:58

I like ‘strong’ boys names but not ‘strong’ girls names because I think on girls they sound a bit stuffy/not pretty.

OP posts:
DuchessOfSausage · 13/08/2022 12:42

Are you saying you think boys should be strong and girls pretty? I don't think your girls' names are particularly pretty, although I know a Poppy and a Willow and both are very attractive, intelligent and athletic.

Wouldloveanother · 13/08/2022 13:01

@DuchessOfSausage no, I just gravitate more towards boys names that are considered ‘strong’ and girls names that are considered ‘pretty’. We all have personal preferences, no?

WishDragon · 13/08/2022 13:12

I like Teagan, however you spell it. I do know of one. It would make a change from all the endless Evie/Isla/Ava/Amelia’s that are out there.

I find Poppy too cutsey for an adult, it’s also really popular especially as all the Poppys I know seem to have the filler middle name of Rose/Grace/May.

I do like Leo and know so many Jacks and George’s.

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 13/08/2022 13:23

Willow - lovely, I think my top pick from your girls list.
Teaghan - I'm not a huge fan but it's fine!
Poppy- really having a moment this one. Lots of little Poppies about.
Brooke - I feel like this has a totally different vibe to the others! I do like it, I'd say this is my second choice.

George - love, I know it's popular but I think for good reason. Top pick.
Jack - like. A solid name.
Leo - popular again but I like it.
Frank - not a huge fan, I have taught a few and find it bizarre calling a young boy Frank. Puts me in mind of a 90 year old in a flat cap.

Wouldloveanother · 13/08/2022 13:28

That’s what I thought about Teaghan/Teagan - that it would be a bit of a chance from the girls names ending in -a or -ie. I know it’s a bit early 2000S but I don’t think it’s ever been so popular that it will really date?

i really like George but my only issue is that the name George is a sensitive topic in my family for various reasons (think estranged relative that caused a lot of hurt).

my top choice would be Willow and Jack, right here right now.

I like the name Teagan, don't think it sounds harsh at all. Definitely would be my top pick from the girls.

TenThousandSpoons · 13/08/2022 14:02

Poppy is my favourite of your girls’ names. Also love Daisy and Rose.

Not keen on Teaghan or Brooke and don’t consider them “pretty” at all - American trend names that are quite tomboy sounding to me.

Willow is pretty but I know 2 cats called this.

I like Jack and George a lot. Jack top choice.
Leo is ok but having a moment so might date.
Not keen on Frank.

pitterypattery00 · 13/08/2022 14:53

I really like Jack and Leo. Dislike George and Frank - just not my taste - but they are ok names, nothing wrong with them.

Willow is ok but I'm not keen on your other girl options at all, sorry - and Teaghan and Brooke aren't what I'd call 'pretty' names, if that's what you're looking for.

A few suggestions which may suit 🤷‍♀️
