I know several Annelieses / Annalises ... none of them have had their names shortened.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 12/08/2022 17:29

My DD has an alliterative sounding name. It’s never been an issue.

If you like Nellie, go for it. I would maybe choose Nell though instead.

User56785 · 12/08/2022 17:32

I would try hard to find a name where you can use Nellie as a nickname as I really agree with @Luredbyapomegranate that it isn't fair to call a child Nellie Nevitt. Some names are striking when paired together but this is a clumsy, comedic and awkward name.

I don't think it matters whether other people like or don't like a name but saddling a person with a daft name is not reasonable.

Nellie/Nel is lovely, please use it if it’s your favourite. People can come up with silly rhymes or associations for everything if they try! The alliteration is fine too.

Just do Grace as a middle name though, not a hyphen, it’s just nicer!

Thank you so much x

OP ask Mumsnet HQ to remove your other thread with your surname on. I'm sure they will understand why.

The NN name is too much.
Lyla is lovely as is Grace.

I'd avoid Harper ( Harpic) they would meet someone who can say H.
One little Harper at our school is often called Arps.

Oncemoreforluck · 12/08/2022 17:46

I know a Penelope who’s nickname was Nellie as a toddler, then became Nell. She now mostly uses her full name.

gotelltheoldmandowntheroad · 12/08/2022 18:12

Opinions?

Harper reminds me too much of Harpie.

anything with Grace makes me feel a bit sick, as it's sickly.

Lylah same thing.

Nellie I find original, I like that, abut prefer Nelle and also like Noelle and Noah for a girl.

whatausername · 12/08/2022 18:53

OP, I think you need to just say "Here is baby Nellie" and introduce her to people. It comes across like she is already Nellie in your head and you are letting strangers' opinions get to you. Which is understandable, 11 days ago you gave birth, you're sleep-deprived, hormones are doing the whacky on you... Don't stress about this, focus on your beautiful healthy daughter. Congratulations Flowers welcome to the world, Nellie Star

ofwarren · 12/08/2022 19:09

OP, they aren't the type of names I like but if you like the sound of Nellie Grace Nevitt then go for it!
There is nothing inherently wrong or awful with the name and you will just regret it if you don't.

Thank you so much. The thought of people telling me I'm setting her up for bullying is what's put me off but maybe if I find a middle name that she could use if she does grow up to dislike her name then I would feel better.. Grace is after partners family member but we also have the options of Ivy, Donna Emilia, Reign, Jade to honour our family as my others girls middle names are all after family members x

As one of three girls I have a soft spot for a sister of trios<3

They are all lovely, with my favorite is Harper Wren :)

Can we know which one you ended up choosing?

Harper Wren was partners choice. I was unsure on Wren as that was my nickname growing up and certain family still call me that now. Its a name which my great nan started when I was a tiny baby. He liked Harper or Remi but I think Remi is possibly used more for a boy. If I had a boy I would probably defo use that. I will keep you posted, still have 2 weeks until we register her luckily x

Annelie Grace! Beautiful

I don't mind Nellie with your surname, but only as a nickname- give her the option of Annelie/Annie/anything she likes as she gets older

Thank you. I have never heard of Annelie before very recently. Partner thought I was saying Amelie wrong 😂

I actually prefer Annelie to Amelie. an underrated name!

Greensleeves · 12/08/2022 19:49

I know an 18yo Nellie. She's gorgeous and super cool. Her name really suits her.

I like Harper Wren as well.

Thank you thats good to hear. It's more the alliteration with the surname that seems to be an issue in this case. I love the Name

I think if you love the name Nellie as does your partner, you should just go for it. It’s your 3rd daughter I understand so you may regret never using a name you clearly hold dear. Nell is a pretty cool name that she could use if it turns out she doesn’t like Nellie herself.

Mumofgirls2017 · 12/08/2022 22:34

Harper Wren!

Mittens1717 · 12/08/2022 23:00

I would go with my gut and name her Nellie as you obviously love it so much, Nellie Nevitt sounds perfectly fine to me

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/08/2022 00:04

Aw sorry you are struggling OP- it's horrible having these extra stresses post-partum (I went through the same thing after I had my DS, who also has an alliterative name so it wouldn't be everyone's choice, despite his first name being a much more popular name than Nellie).

IMO you have 3 choices - go with your current fave (Nellie Grace N). Go with a semi- compromise - Anneliese Grace N (but introduce her as "Nellie" to everyone from day 1 so it's very unlikely people will ever call her anything else, unless she herself insists she prefers Anna/Anneliese when older). Or go with you and your partners original first name choice - Harper Nellie N sounds fine to me and that way you still get Nellie in the name.

I'd probably go for option 2 as you kind of get it all then - a less common and elegant, international first name (Anneliese - I knew a lovely German one at school) , but with a cute day to day nn (Nellie), no alliteration concern and a middle name that has meaning to you (Grace).

Good Luck! And at the end of the day, I think you could be right - most kids probably won't think of the elephant (that will be more parents/grandparents imo). Equally I think kids don't seem bothered by or even seem to like alliterative names - as it's very superhero (Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Lois Lane etc).

DuchessOfSausage · 13/08/2022 00:27

Anneliese will be misspelt a lot.
I think you can register a baby without a name and add it later, but check if that's right.
Zoe Ball has a Nelly and there's Nelly Furtado and Nell McAndrew.

Rosecottage888 · 13/08/2022 00:47

Harper Wren ❤️

Mumnetter1234 · 13/08/2022 03:06

J3110 · 12/08/2022 15:28

I had my heart set on using Nellie somehow as it has a lot of meaning to me. I'm considering Harper Nellie but also considering a formal version for Nellie so I can still call her Nellie but the only ones I don't particularly hate are Anneleise and Anneli but then ky partner said she would probably be named Anna/Annie

Don’t listen to them OP I love Nellie! It’s the name of billie faiers daughter. And I think the elephant reference is long gone.

Underhisi · 13/08/2022 11:36

I don't think there is anything wrong with the name Nellie. It is combining it with the surname that is the problem. So I think having it as the nickname of another name, having Nell on the birth certificate or having it as a middle name ( although it wouldn't actually be used then) are better options.
