Boy name list!

DotDotDotDotDot · 10/08/2022 15:11

Hello

I was hoping for some opinions on my boy name list please. Baby due at the end of the year. I recently posted my girls list which was helpful.

Max/Maximilian - would be Max day to day, I can’t decide if they need the full name on the bc or if Max is fine on it’s own.

Nathaniel - I like the full name and also the nn Nate.

Rafael/Raphael - not sure which spelling I prefer, also like the possible nn’s here.

Jasper

Joah - I know most people may not have heard of this but it is a real name from the Bible.

Thanks in advance.

Max could be Maxwell if you prefer a shorter full name.

I like Nathaniel/Nate

I think Joah would get very annoyed correcting all the Joes and Joel’s he’ll inevitably be called.

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 10/08/2022 15:18

Love your list!
Max - a firm favourite of mine. I know of a Maxwell and Magnus who both shorten to Max if you wanted other longer name options.
Nathaniel - really lovely, I also like Nate as a nn.
Raphael - I prefer this spelling although I'm not fussed really. This is a gorgeous name and was on my shortlist for dc3.
Jasper - not as nice as your other names! I'd cut this from the list personally.
Joah - not heard of it and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I reckon it could grow on me.
My top pick would be either Max or Raphael.

Sandysandwich · 10/08/2022 15:20

I like Nathaniel, Joah and Max on it's it's own, the long versions are unnecessary

IggyAce · 10/08/2022 15:22

From your list I like Nathaniel.
Just Max on the bc is fine, however it’s quite popular in my area.
Jasper not a fan I automatically think wet blanket and carrot.
No real opinion on your other choices.

DuchessOfSausage · 10/08/2022 15:34

Max on its own is fine, but you could have Maximilian, Maxim, Maxwell, Maximus etc
Nathaniel/Nate is fine
Rafael/Raphael - No
Jasper - ok, slightly canine
Joah - as a biblical name it's a bit obscure and people will think you just spelt Noah with a J, but otherwise OK. At least it doesn't have a No in it.

SundayTeatime · 10/08/2022 15:50

I like Max/Maximilian. I’d go for the longer version. Definitely not Maxwell. That has a different vibe.

Nathaniel/Nate. I like the longer version but I’m not keen on Nate.

Rafael/Raphael. I like. I’d spell ph.

Jasper -fine but I can’t warm to it. Prefer Casper/Caspar, etc.

Joah- I know the name, but I think you’ll get a stream of Joe, Jonah, Joshua, Noah etc. Not keen.

Mumofgirls2017 · 10/08/2022 16:01

Jasper is my favourite

raphael and max are ok

DotDotDotDotDot · 10/08/2022 17:46

Thanks everyone for your comments so far. I think you’re probably right about Joah. It’s maybe a bit too obscure and likely to get misheard which could be annoying. I only came across it recently and added it to my list, there’s definitely something I really like about it but maybe it’s my pregnancy hormones?

Max/Maximilian - like Max but not Maximilian. I like Maxime as a long version (a French name).

Nathaniel - I like this but prefer Nathan.

Rafael/Raphael - like this, prefer Rafael spelling.

Jasper - dislike. A bit pretentious to my ear.

Joah - haven't heard of it but it has a familiar sound being a combination of Joseph and Noah. I think I quite like it.

MassiveSalad22 · 10/08/2022 18:16

Max - love, considered for my boys but Max doesn’t work with our surname. Couldn’t settle on a long version (Maximilian too posh, Maxwell doesn’t suit us…?) I think Max alone is fine.

Nathaniel - nice

Raphael - nice

Jasper - I feel like he’d need to be born wearing a pair of pink chinos tbh. FAR prefer Caspar. Also no obvious shortenings.

Joah - you’ll get a lot of ‘Joah? 🫤 Ok…’ to your face. My eldest has one of those names and it does irk.

MassiveSalad22 · 10/08/2022 18:17

I’m suggesting Joel - the best name, regret not using it!

5511551l · 10/08/2022 19:47

How about Jonah or Jonas?

Love Maximilian, Nathaniel and Raphael, quite like Jasper. Maybe Gabriel?

Penfelyn · 10/08/2022 21:33

I like Maximilian (the full name on the birth certificate only gives you more options, not less).

My second fav is Raphaël (written like this). You can use Rafe, Raph, Rapha as a nickname, they're all nice.

Nathaniel is nice but I've grown tired of it personally (totally subjective though, the name is still very nice).

Jasper, meh. Don't hate it, don't love it.

Joah - I wouldn't, people will think they misheard Noah or Joey. However I think Joachim is very nice and you could shorten it to Joa day to day.

sageandbasil · 10/08/2022 21:49

I've not heard of Joah but I really like it- he may get mistaken for noah allt though

Rafael (Rafe) is my next fave

I love Jasper and jt was on my list but it's soooo popular atm. Always tons at the park

Really dislike Nathaniel.

Max is okay but abit plain

DotDotDotDotDot · 11/08/2022 09:00

I might knock Jasper off the list. It’s actually my partners least favourite - although he could be swayed. I think it’s a bit of a marmite name and maybe still has a bit of a posh boy image to some despite its growing popularity.

clpsmum · 11/08/2022 09:12

Noah might be a real name but no one will have ever heard of it and everyone will assume you made it up. I like joe, Noah and Jonah but think Joah looks like a spelling mistake sorry

Derbee · 11/08/2022 09:15

I know 2 Max’s and they’re both lovely! One is Max as his “full name” and the other’s parents say in hindsight they’d have just done Max as well, rather than Maximilian (or however you spell it!)

babyjellyfish · 11/08/2022 09:15

I like them all but probably wouldn't use Joah because he'll get called Joe, Joel, Jonah and all sorts and you'll spend your life correcting people.

I do like Joel and Jonah though, come to think of it.

Brented · 11/08/2022 09:24

Jasper doesn’t sound pretentious to me, but I associate it with a dog’s name (know a lot of dogs called Jasper and Hugo), and can’t really get over the association.

Max is fine, it’s quite popular and a bit plain (even with a longer name), I know 5 under 3s called Maximilian).

I can’t stand the name Nate, not sure why, feels a bit too US teen sitcom.

I love Raffi, Raffa, and Joah. Not heard of the latter before, I don’t think it will be mispronounced, but even if it is, they’ll only mispronounce once!

Giles1008 · 12/08/2022 15:15

Bias as we have a Maximilian who goes by Max. We had the exact same dilemma about Max/ Maximilian and I’m really glad I gave him the longer form now.

Love all your names, we have similar taste!

DotDotDotDotDot · 12/08/2022 16:00

That’s good to hear @Giles1008 . I think I am leaning towards Maximilian on the bc, known as Max for a boy aswell. I’ll keep Nathaniel and Raphael on the list for now though, I may change my mind again. Thanks everyone.

Nathaniel nn Nate

Max is nice but overused

Raphael I just don’t personally like

Joah I think will be a pain - if not Jonah then maybe Josiah ?
