Alia, Aalia or Aaliyah

Thoughts? This will be the name if it's a girl but want to make sure it's pronunciation is correct. I like the first spelling best but don't want people to say "alley-a" because it should be pronounced "aah - Lee-yah) as it's Arabic

I'd go with the third (Aaliyah).
Alia to me would be Ar-li-ah or A-lie-ah

Fivebeanchilli · 08/08/2022 19:32

Alia - I wouldn't be sure how to pronounce it. I probably would assume Alley-uh or even Aylee-uh first. Although Talia fits with your pronunciation so maybe it should be easier.
Aalia - I would get it right but don't think the spelling looks right
Aaliyah - looks more "normal" to me.
I also have come across Aaliah and Aaliya.
Most that I know pronounce it aah -LEE - uh. My instinct is to say AAH - leah. I try and remember but I do often get corrected.

Katjolo · 08/08/2022 19:36

3rd one or Aliyah?

ariesalien · 08/08/2022 19:36

I only know one person with this name and it is spelled Aleya.

I'd pronounce the first 'alley-Uh'

Would probably have the best shot at pronouncing the last one.

FayCarew · 08/08/2022 19:37

Aaliyah
I'd say it as Aah-LEE-a

pinklavenders · 08/08/2022 19:42

Alia - pronounced aah - lee -yah

Like Thalia or Aria.

TakeMe2Insanity · 08/08/2022 20:18

I’d go with Aliya or Aliyah

Luxa · 08/08/2022 20:19

Aaliyah

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 08/08/2022 20:22

I know people with the last two of those.

The first one, my instinct would be “AY-lee-uh” a bit like alias or alien without the final sound. But I wouldn’t be surprised if someone spelt it like that and would remember once told if you see what I mean.

Scirocco · 08/08/2022 20:28

I'd go with the third; it feels like the closest transliteration from Arabic and gives a better indicator of pronunciation, I think.

Fivebeanchilli · 08/08/2022 21:05

Aleya I would assume was a - LAY - uh.

blameitonthecaffeine · 08/08/2022 21:39

I've never seen the first two spellings.

Aaliyah is, I think, the 'correct' spelling but I would assume Arabic heritage.

Non arabic children I have known with this name have spelled it Aliya and Alya.

I know an Aaliyah and she is fab.

41andtryingforfirst · 08/08/2022 21:49

Thanks guys! Lots of food for thought. I'm of Arabic heritage and wanted a name that reflected my culture x

I would definitely use Aaliyah then. It's a really beautiful name.

AliBaliBears · 08/08/2022 23:38

I like the look of Alia the best but I would assume it was pronounced Alley-a.

I know an Aliya, which I assumed (wrongly) was pronounced A-lie-a. She pronounces it Alley-a.

So whatever spelling you choose you may have to correct people to get the pronunciation you want but they'll soon learn!

pinklavenders · 09/08/2022 13:32

Alia looks like it's pronounced like Talia or Aria. I prefer this spelling

Penfelyn · 10/08/2022 04:31

I think Aaliyah looks best and reflects your desired pronunciation best too.

People will be familiar with this spelling because of the singer and are less likely to get it wrong (though they still will, my son's name is Ilya - only 4 letters and they still get it incredibly wrong.)

Technophobic · 10/08/2022 04:33

The first two look like you didn’t know how to spell it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/08/2022 16:45

Aalia is most likely going to get you the pronunciation you want

KirstenBlest · 12/08/2022 17:48

I disagree. Aaliyah is the one that is best. Alia and Aalia look like Al-ya and Aahl-ya

DerisorySnort · 12/08/2022 19:52

I like Aaliyah best, beautiful name; though interestingly it autocorrects to 'Aliyah'!

Alialinxiaoyu · 11/03/2023 05:56

I am Chinese and I would like to find a English perfer name for me. I used the name Alia on a character I created and I thought I could use it for my name irl. Is it appropreate though? I searched it up and it says it is an arabic name but I am Chinese. Plz help.

41andtryingforfirst · 11/03/2023 09:53

I’m sure it’ll be fine. I actually lost this baby so never got to use the name…
