Choosing a name when there's nothing you absolutely love

Is it just a case of hoping that a name grows on you enough? Baby is a boy and there aren't any names that either myself or DP are in love with. The name I always thought I'd name a boy was Tristan but it's DP's brother's name so it's not really useable.

I had quite a few girl's names that I really liked (Martha, Eliza, Alice were the top ones) but there are no boy names that feel like my son, if you see what I mean.

We quite like Freddie, although DP has a 9 year old cousin called Freddie. The surname would be different and the boys would be unlikely to hang out together but DP and his uncle socialise several times a week so it's probably a bit odd. Other possible contenders are Alexander and Oliver. We also quite like Hector but not sure if were brave enough! But still none of them feel like "the one".

Taran?

Tor?

It’s so hard to find a ‘special’ boys name I know.

Fivebeanchilli · 29/07/2022 22:41

Hector is gorgeous!

KirstenBlest · 29/07/2022 22:43

Taran is awful. Thunderclap.
Isn't Tor written as Thor?

Musmerian · 29/07/2022 22:44

Hector is a brilliant name - go for it. I taught a Hector who went by Hal which I also really like.

SheeplessAndCounting · 29/07/2022 23:45

Nigel is due a comeback.

Pick a sentimental family name. You can tell your child all the amazing things about the relative they were named after

Goodnewsday · 29/07/2022 23:55

I had this and we eventually went back to the name we had said years ago our boy would be called. Now he’s here he’s so obviously that name and I don’t ever question it. I liked Freddie and Finn too! I ended up printing out the top 1000 names and highlighting any that remotely interested me, I think there were only about 4 😂I

pinklavenders · 30/07/2022 11:01

Similar to Tristan

Reuben
Quentin
Roman
Caspian

I'd avoid Hector due to the meaning (to hector) and the nickname Heck Blush

sageandbasil · 30/07/2022 11:14

@SheeplessAndCounting It's really not 😂

pinklavenders · 30/07/2022 11:19

I taught a Hector who went by Hal

Better than Heck, but still not great - sounds like Halitosis...!
