Would you say:

Eve-lin
Ehv-lin
Ev-uh-lin

I’m just curious as to which pronunciation is most popular. It’s one of those names that is nice but nobody ever seems to agree on how to say.

The one in my family is ev-lin. Personally I wouldn't choose it for this very reason - I would get irritated by everyone pronouncing it differently!

Princessoftheuniverse · 22/07/2022 17:03

I’ve just realised I’m not consistent in how I pronounce it so not much help. Just call her Eve. It’s a lovely name.

Kite22 · 22/07/2022 17:03

I know both eeeeve-lins and ever-lins/evuh-lins is equal proportions. I don't think one is more popular than the other around here.

Belephant · 22/07/2022 17:06

Oh god, this is going to turn into a thread where people pretend they don't understand that non-rhotic accents exist, isn't it?!

Anyway, I would assume Ev-uh-lyn (which is pronounced the exact same Ever-lyn in my accent 😉). I think I prefer eev-lyn, though actually. But I like the name in general, regardless of pronunciation!

Roselilly36 · 22/07/2022 17:13

I would say Eve-Lynn, others I know say Eve r Lynn

KirstenBlest · 22/07/2022 17:17

Until a few years ago I'd only heard it said as Eev-lin, or occasionaly Evlin.

PinkPair · 22/07/2022 17:40

@SemperIdem I would decide the pronunciation you want and adjust the spelling so it's obvious eg. Evlyn or Eve-Lynn or Evilyn
My cousin did this with a similar name and her DD's name always been pronounced exactly the way they want it, no confusion.

KirstenBlest · 22/07/2022 17:55

I would pick a different name. I don't think that Evlyn, Eve-Lynn or Evilyn would thank you for the dodgy spelling.

SplendidUtterly · 22/07/2022 18:00

I use to call my friend "Evil-Lyn"
Luckily she saw the funny side and got the reference to that old 80's cartoon "He-man" :)

SycamoreTall · 22/07/2022 18:23

Evelyn Waugh and his wife were both eev-lyn. Make of that what you will, I suppose!

ParasiticMicrowasp · 22/07/2022 18:40

pinklavenders · 22/07/2022 16:02

Ever-Lyn

But there's no R..?!

And a pretty significant number of English speakers in the UK have non-rhotic accents and so don't pronounce the 'r' in 'ever'...

RuthW · 22/07/2022 19:10

Eve-lin for me

France98 · 22/07/2022 19:11

Ev-lin. I'm in Scotland and don't know anyone who has ever pronounced it differently. Maybe regional variations?

LoisPlane · 22/07/2022 19:12

Ev-uh-lin

BoredOfGrey22 · 22/07/2022 19:53

Ev-Lynn

SpiderVersed · 22/07/2022 19:57

Eev-lin for male
Ev-uh-lin for female

Caspianberg · 22/07/2022 20:00

Ev uh lin

Mind you, Ever-lin, Eva-lin and Ev Uh lin all sound the same to me

SemperIdem · 22/07/2022 20:35

Hmmm I think perhaps best to consign this to the “lovely but will be pronounced differently by about 1 in 3 people” along with Esme and Clara.

Isn't it supposed to be Eve-lin for a boy/man and Ehv-lin for a girl/woman? Or is it the other way round?

I only know one Evelyn who’s a boy and it’s pronounced Eve-lin.

YetDespiteTheLookOnMyFace · 22/07/2022 20:47

I know three. All Ev uh lin. Two Evie for short with a long ee sound.

whiteroseredrose · 22/07/2022 20:52

Eve Lyn

bluegardenflowers · 22/07/2022 21:56

pinklavenders · 22/07/2022 16:02

Ever-Lyn

But there's no R..?!

It's written phonetically ! That's means it's spelt as you would say it, which is what op is asking for.

FWIW I would also say ever.lyn

LizzieAnt · 22/07/2022 23:00

I say it as Ev-uh-lin.

@bluegardenflowers
I think the problem is some people pronounce the letter r in ever, so that's why it can cause confusion when written like that. In my rhotic accent Ev-uh-lin and Ever-lin are different.

I don't think anyone is pretending@Belephant. If you have a rhotic accent it can be confusing the first time you come across the letter r written when it's not intended to be pronounced. I know I was confused when I first joined these threads.

bluegardenflowers · 23/07/2022 09:33

I think everyone pronounces ever as evuh. Yet to hear eveurrr 😂

I don't say evuh for ever, I say ev-urr (not eve-urr).
Those with rhotic accents (eg Irish, Scottish) pronounce the r.
