Name to honour Wendy

Grumpylabrador · 17/07/2022 12:48

I’m posting this on behalf of a friend who’s expecting their baby soon, she would like to honour her mum who’s names Wendy, she says she quite likes the name but doesn’t think it goes with the girl names she’s picked out and she needs suggestions if the baby is a boy. Any help would be marvellous.

Girls Name: Delphi

Boys Name: Jude/Hank (not quite decided)

and the surname is one 2 syllables beginning with J

Many Thanks in Advance x

Wendy is fine as a middle name, but I admit it’s singsong alongside Delphi.
Gwyn for a boy. It has the same etymology as Gwen/Gwendolyn etc.

FirstFallopians · 18/07/2022 10:35

Wendall for a boy?

But agree with PP- outside of adaptions for male/female variations, if you’re not using the same name you need to weigh up if it’s still as meaningful.

It's not really honouring someone if you use a different name.

I agree - it's worse than nothing because you are saying "We wanted to honour you...but obviously we couldn't use your name because it's awful. So we picked a totally different name, but aren't we great to honour you?"

hit the nail on the head

Delphine is nicer than Delphi, which sounds a bit like a hotel or theatre

well... this wasn't the question, was it?
Delphi was, to the ancient Greeks, the centre of the world: there was a famous temple to Apollo there with an oracle. Delphi is a very old name. Hilarious what people on Mumsnet see the need to correct.

I do think Delphi Gwen is sweet.

Wendy as a middle name is just fine. I like the shorter name in between- Delphi Jane/Ruth/Jean Wendy etc.

Was it originally short for Gwendolyn then? Didn't know that!

For a boy... Peter, or what was/is your mum's maiden name? Perhaps that would work as a first or middle name instead of trying to match Wendy?

daisypond · 19/07/2022 07:46

No, not really. It was invented from scratch by JM Barrie for Peter Pan. But it’s possible that he came up with it as a short form from Gwendolen.

Use Wendy. It's an unusual and pretty name.

I saw a birth announcement recently - baby "called Kai, named in honour of grandfather Kenneth"
Tenuous.

This made me laugh my head off!

Although I do like the Moira and Angela suggestions.

@ladycarlotta , it wasn't the question, and I know about Delphi thanks, but there are Adelphi Hotels and Adelphi Theatres.

If a complete random on a forum is thinking it, then chances are, others will too.

Use Wendy or don’t. But to “honour” someone with a name that isn’t theirs because you don’t want to use the actual name is verging on offensive.

baconbarm · 19/07/2022 09:36

Really like Delphi Gwen as suggested above but also like the idea of adding a name between Delphi and Wendy. I think it just needs another name to break up the "ee" sounds.

MerryChristmasToYou · 19/07/2022 09:52

I don't think Delphi Wendy is unusable. Middle names are hardly ever used.
Another middle name is just going to be a filler name and
Delphi Grace Wendy Smith is still singsongy

There's an athlete called Wenda, that might be a suitable middle name

Yes, I agree.
