Eleven, girls name?

Watching Stranger Things and it has got me thinking whether the name Eleven could break through as a semi-mainstream girls name. It invites diminutives already common girls names - Elle and Ellie - making it seem less out there, easy to pronounce and spell as an existing word, and it's nice sonically. Also, my prediction on names trends is that we will move away for vowel heavy liquid consonant names to harder sounding names which this fits. What do people think?

Three girls were named Eleven in 2019: names.darkgreener.com/#eleven

It could be that one or two babies have been named Eleven in other years but the site doesn’t record names given to fewer than 3 babies. But either way I don’t think it’s having much of a rise in popularity.

Poor Eleven and all of the other kids in the facility were given feckin NUMBERS for names as it made scientific testing on them easier to manage- who the feck wants to romanticise that?!

Can you imagine how embarrassing that would be at school? It's creepily reminiscent of Jews being tattooed with numbers in concentration camps.

Just an awful, awful thing to do to a child.

Ontomatopea · 14/07/2022 20:22

No. Just no. All the El names seem a bit 2000s2010s now anyway

No. The whole point of the ‘name’ is that she has been depersonalized and tattooed with it (with all the connotations that has). It’s not quirky, it’s horrible.

This is a really good point. It's supposed to feel like the tattooed numbers prisoners at Nazi concentration camps like Auschwitz were given.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/07/2022 20:25

Well some people called their kid Khaleesi, but it’s not a general trend

Aorh · 14/07/2022 21:50

I actually get your point logically as to why it might be a candidate for that sort of name. It’s awful though. And if was going to take off as a result of Stranger Things, I think it would have already happened.

”hi, I’m Eleven”

”no you’re not, you’re 14”

DorritLittle · 14/07/2022 21:56

Or a Borg

😂

DorritLittle · 14/07/2022 21:57

It would be like calling a child OfGlen. It's a No for me.

DorritLittle · 14/07/2022 21:59

Offred, I mean! But same principle.

SurpriseSurprise · 14/07/2022 22:11

I do actually know a three year old called Seven. I hated it at first but it has grown on me. But Eleven just sounds a bit more clumsy

Longdistance · 14/07/2022 22:13

Evelyn would be better. 11 SMH

SeanChailleaçh · 14/07/2022 22:37

Eleven's real name, Jane, is due a cómeback.

SouperNoodle · 14/07/2022 22:48

@MrsOwainGlyndŵr there's a girl in my child's preschool called Seven. Her sister is named one of the months of the year. I won't say which as that would just be too outing but honestly, I've always found it ridiculous 🙊

BeautifulWar · 14/07/2022 23:35

First name Seven. Middle name Eleven.
Seven Eleven is very popular in USA.

Arh beat, me to it!

Exactly. Replacing people's names with a number was all part of the dehumanising Sad

Ignoranceisbliss44 · 16/07/2022 09:17

I like Elvie or Elva.

bitelover · 17/07/2022 01:07

I think it's awful and it will inspire endless jokes.

There have been a handful of girls named "Analeigh" in recent years - that doesn't make it a good name or a good choice.

PoleFairy · 19/07/2022 15:55

I think there could be an influx in stranger things mega fans calling girls Eleven, in the same way I know a few Leia's after their dad's were obsessed with star wars

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/07/2022 15:58

My mum had a friend whose granddaughter was the tenth grandchild in the family so was called Decima. I do wonder still, whether that girl blesses or curses her parents.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 19/07/2022 16:29

We had a head teacher called Decima. I quite like it. Also Sixtus and Octavia.
