I really like Maggie but don’t like Margaret. I love Maggie Alice but DH thinks she would need to be Margaret Alice as Maggie isn’t a “proper” name IYSWIM.
what’s the mumsnet verdict?

I think he’s right, you might be good with Maggie and it’s nice - but it is quite nick namey, which she might not like. Why not give her options.

Marguerite, Margot, Megan, Magdalena, Magdalene, Magda..

Blankbias · 07/07/2022 23:29

Absolutely fine. Not sure why people would chose a name they like then make their child have a longer name they don’t like?

Blankbias · 07/07/2022 23:30

What is a proper name anyway?

GlazedDoughnuts · 07/07/2022 23:33

I think Maggie is perfectly fine as a name on its own. Don't use a name you're not happy with just because it has a longer version. There's plenty of Ollies/Libbys/Chris/Tobys running about.

Luxa · 07/07/2022 23:36

I'm not very keen on the combination, because the rhythm and vowels are so similar in the two names. Ah-ee ah-ih.

soulinablackberrypie · 07/07/2022 23:40

I happen to dislike the name Maggie, but I don't think it is unsuitable as a full name if you like it. There are plenty of kids out there whose full name is Katie or Charlie.

blueshoes · 07/07/2022 23:41

Marie Alice is prettier

DramaAlpaca · 07/07/2022 23:42

I'm with your DH.

JanglyBeads · 07/07/2022 23:54

Maggie is OK, Alice is fine, but they don't work together IMHO as the former suggests casual and the latter is quite formal.

HaveringWavering · 07/07/2022 23:57

Peggy Alice is also nice.

Do you already have kids called Bart and Lisa?

Peggy Alice?! Really 🤣.

HeddaGarbled · 08/07/2022 00:07

I agree with your husband.

AppleHa · 08/07/2022 00:10

For me Maggie doesn’t feel like a real name, personally if I had it as a name I would feel a bit unfinished! But, Imwouldnt say the same with , for example, Sally which was originally a nickname for Sarah, or Jack which was a nick name for John, or even Harry, so names do change and there is no reason to not like it as a stand alone name (apart from the Thatcher element) - I just don’t.

Sorry, I don’t understand why you’re laughing at Peggy Alice?

JustMaggie · 08/07/2022 00:23

Maggie is a good name 😃

SpaceJamtart · 08/07/2022 00:45

Margaret is an awful name, I wouldn't saddle a kid with that just for the benefit of it being a 'proper' name.
Maggie is fine as a full name.

I'm a person whose parents gave me a full long proper name and used a derivative fron the start. Its so annoying and there are no benefits to it for me- its just an irritating extra bit of admin tied to you until you decide to go through the hassle of legally changing it. Its so much easier to just be called your name.

user1477391263 · 08/07/2022 01:08

I think you either need to find something else for the BC (Magdela? Margot?) or go back to the drawing board. You both need to like the name and it sounds like your husband isn't happy with "Maggie." (I wouldn't be either, to be honest)

rahjama · 08/07/2022 01:25

Maggie is very nicknamey. That's not a bad tning though.

It doesn't work with Alice IMO.

Butterbeer4All · 08/07/2022 02:08

I like Maggie

AmandaMirandaPanda · 08/07/2022 06:24

I wouldn't use Margaret (or Margarita or Magenta or Magnolia, etc.) if you dislike it, but I do see Maggie as quite informal - maybe because of the double vowel followed by the ee sound. It's also a little hard to vary - I know a fortysomething Meggie, who often uses Meg in slightly more formal situations, but Mags and Mag seem even more casual. I suppose it's just tradition that puts Maggie and Meggie in diminutive territory while Bonnie, Holly, etc. are legitimate standalones, but if your husband sees it that way I doubt he'll change his mind.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 08/07/2022 06:25

(Sorry, double CONSONANT followed by ee!)

WishingAndHoping11 · 08/07/2022 06:26

I like the name Maggie. It's actually our cat's name - she's Maggie-May. I taught a lovely little girl years ago called Maggie so good association.

WishingAndHoping11 · 08/07/2022 06:28

Oh the reason our cat is called Maggie... It's from the character of Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, played by Elizabeth Taylor in the film.

Themidnightcat · 08/07/2022 06:34

We're in a similar boat, I really like Effy but not Elizabeth but really I don't think it matters.

Watermelon46 · 08/07/2022 06:34

It makes me think of malice.

What about Alice as a first name, ie Alice Maggie or Alice,Margaret?
