Rivka

Thoughts on Rivka? It's the original Hebrew version of Rebekah, for a little girl, of course. I love names with a 'ka' sound at the end (also like Anoushka and Angelica but can't use because of surname!)

I think I prefer it spelt Rivkah but it's nice either way.

AG247 · 03/07/2022 07:55

Are you Jewish? Because it’s a name typically used by many Orthodox Jews for their daughters. (I am Jewish but kind of avoid those names because of the hasidic association)

That being said, why shouldn’t you use it? The connotations for me would obviously be different for somebody else plus there are cute nicknames ( my aunt is riv, pronounced reev and I love that name.)

Hello! I'm a Christian, but have some Jewish heritage 😊

I like it.

ChagSameachDoreen · 03/07/2022 09:13

Gorgeous for an Orthodox Jewish girl.

For a Christian girl I would go with Rebecca.

mdh2020 · 03/07/2022 09:58

I agree - go with Rebecca. Rivka isn’t appropriate unless you are Orthodox Jewish. anyway, my dad always told us a bedtime story about a greyhound called Rivka the Racer.

Ouchmytoe100 · 03/07/2022 10:24

We don't like Rebekah and aren't considering it. We have Jewish heritage so feel comfortable using it. Wanted opinions on the sound of the name rather than our eligibility to use it! Even without our Jewish heritage, at our church many, many people have Hebrew names!

So opinions on the sound of the name would be appreciated, not looking for other suggestions as havr a few others on our list already 😊

Ooh I think it’s ugly, sorry

Too close to rivet

Also makes me think of that poor girl murdered by Oscar P, I know she was Reeva but it’s what popped into my head.

Saskia is nice, for the Ka end
Or Lois as an OT name

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/07/2022 12:42

I think it’s lovely op. Not heard it before

HobnobsChoice · 03/07/2022 12:45

When you say Jewish heritage what do you mean, a grandparent , great grandparents? A relative youve met or just a name in a family tree? As others have noted it's not a name really used outside of Charedi communities. Yes lots of names have Hebrew origins but Rivka now has an established spelling in English. It'd be like using Avram rather than Abraham.

I don't think it's an especially nice sounding name. There's a lot of nice Old Testament names you could chose from, Rivka is not one of them.

Sorry, not really willing to give away too many personal details on this forum, very outing paired with everything I've already posted! Like i mentioned before, it's not really relevant to my question as I have said we have the relevant heritage to use the name and am just looking for opinions on it, and not to prove this fact 😊

Is it just pronounced phonetically?
If so, I like the sound of it

AbsoluteYawns · 03/07/2022 13:04

It's really old fashioned and reminds me of an old lady. Sorry OP it's so weird for a child who is not super religious.

I think it's a lovely name and unusual, but not too tricky to spell or pronounce.
It's delightful - go for it!

Yes I agree, it ticks all the boxes for a good name to me.

eatsleepswimdive · 03/07/2022 13:19

It’s almost exclusively used in Ultra orthodox Jewish families . It would be very unusual for even traditionally observant Jewish families to use it. It’s a nice enough name although super old fashioned. There are much nicer names you could choose to reflect your Jewish heritage
