Do they avoid the nn Wally? What are they called instead?

In general is it easy to avoid the nn Wally?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
KittenKong · 02/07/2022 18:54

I was at school with a Walter. Yes he was called Wally. He was quite an angry kid too (possibly because of being called Wally).

Beees · 02/07/2022 18:55

I've taught 3 recently under the age of 8 and all 3 of them were called Walt. I would imagine Walt is a much more likely nickname than Wally.

sunshineandshowers40 · 02/07/2022 18:55

I know one, around 7/8. No nicknames as far as I'm aware.

SummerLobelia · 02/07/2022 18:57

A friend has a Walter called Walt.

He is the most adorable little guy. I love the name because I associate it with him.

twomumsonebump · 02/07/2022 18:59

Yes and he is just called Walter!

vera16 · 02/07/2022 19:00

There's one in my DCs pre-school. The other children are convinced that his name is Water.

Bagging · 02/07/2022 19:02

@KittenKong, would you like to reveal when (which decade) this was?

I know a 12 year old Walter. Only known as Walter.

olympicsrock · 02/07/2022 19:09

10 year old Walter known as Walter.

Lalosalamanca · 02/07/2022 19:10

I know a 5 year old Walter. Nn Walt. There's time yet though for wally

Calmondeck · 02/07/2022 19:21

I have a Walter who is Walt most of the time. Two of his cousins, unprompted, call him Walty, one little friend calls him Waltz. So far no Wally from anyone.

Bagging · 02/07/2022 19:22

@Calmondeck, nice! How old is your Walter?

OP posts:
Festivalpartygirl · 02/07/2022 19:30

Yes and he hated it, now goes by a completely different name now he’s older.

Ohthatsexciting · 02/07/2022 19:32

My eldest son!

i love love love love it.

he is 17 and everyone knows him as “Walt”

Ikeabag · 02/07/2022 19:46

Yes, he gets Walt. I rarely hear "wally" as a descriptor used these days - it never occurred to me that it could be a nn for Walter when I heard his name. I wasn't sure about it at first but the wee kid is excellent crack, makes my day when I see him - and I love it now.

junebirthdaygirl · 02/07/2022 19:57

Know an 80 year old called Walter and he is very definitely a Walter.. always!
Know a 60 year old Walter..often called Wally down through his life but his family always say Walter
Know a 3 year old..different family and he is always Walter.
Beautiful name.

Adventing · 02/07/2022 20:26

Yes 2, both under 7. Don't know them well but I think they're just known as Walter

LondonQueen · 02/07/2022 21:04

I know a few in my wider circle, can't imagine they would want to be called WallyHmm

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/07/2022 22:55

A couple, known as either Walter or Walt

Floella22 · 02/07/2022 23:00

I just think of Walt Disney.
And Walter in the Beano. He looks like Jacob Rees Mogg.

Womeninthesequel · 02/07/2022 23:02

I know two, 17 and 6, both called Walty at home and Walt everywhere else

curiou · 02/07/2022 23:05

Two, one is 6 and just Walter, the other is 2 and called Walt.

FiveHargreeves · 02/07/2022 23:15

Yes, a few. All under seven.

I don't think people say wally any more.

SpaceJamtart · 02/07/2022 23:20

One who is 2 and gets called Wally but his family instigated that. And one who is 13 who goes by his middle name because he hated being called Walter

Underhisi · 03/07/2022 07:07

There are a few older generation Walters in my family and they are called Walter or Wal ( Wally without the 'ee' sound)
