Hey guys!

I love Niamh, Eilidh, Ailish or Milidh

Any more similar vibe?

Thank you ❤

Sadhbh
Cliona

But these threads always go the same way. Mumsnet hates Irish names. For boys they're termed naughty names. Otherwise we're condemning children to a lifetime of (horror) spelling out names for people.

AliBaliBears · 01/07/2022 13:38

I love the Scottish names Eilidh and Mairi, and the Irish names Eimear, Orla, Fiadh and Aoibhin.

HerTableLaid · 01/07/2022 13:40

Irish names, OP. Not ‘Gaelic’, unless you’re speaking Irish.

I’ve never heard ‘Milidh’ in my life — is it an Irishing of ‘Milly’/‘Millie’?

BruceWaynettaSlob · 01/07/2022 13:44

Where did you find Milidh?

What about Meadhbh?

SycamoreTall · 01/07/2022 13:48

Éilis is another nice spelling, pronounced like Ailish.

Aisling is another similar one I like.

Eilidh In the op is Scottish... so not irish..

daisypond · 01/07/2022 14:00

I’m confused by “Gaelic”. Gaelic relates to Scotland, but most of your name ideas are Irish. Do you want Gaelic Scottish names or Irish? Or will either do?

baxtersm · 01/07/2022 14:08

Meabh is my favourite Irish name. Also love Erin Aoibhinn, Cliodhna, Niamh and Fiadh

Blueberrywitch · 01/07/2022 14:09

I don’t know if this fits the request but I love Sorcha

MissMoodyMoo · 01/07/2022 15:27

Gaelic and gaeilge share similar words and names. In Scottish with irish heritage so I dont mind either irish or scottish.

Ive only ever met 1 milidh and it was at a baby group. It's a scottish name

I already have a fiadh

People not understanding that you get Irish gaelic (gaeilge) and Scottish gaelic!

I quite like Morven!

OnaBegonia · 01/07/2022 22:50

If you have a Fiadh, I'd stick with Irish Gaelic, I have Gaelic names as we come from a Gaelic speaking family (Scotland) and it grinds my gears when folk just use them
with no thought.

user234560290 · 01/07/2022 23:13

I grew up with Gaelic speakers, mostly from the Western Isles. Irish names seem completely different to me.

I understand that perfectly well. The OP said Gaelic. Gaelic always links to Scotland. Gaelige is Irish.

Gaelic always links to Scotland. Gaelige is Irish.

The Irish language is also known as Irish Gaelic (or usually just Irish) though, so it's not that simple.
Gaeilge is the name of the language in standard Irish - but there are different dialectal pronunciations (one of which is Gay-lic). There used to be different spellings too before it was standardised.

'Scottish Gaelic' in Irish is 'Gaeilge na hAlban'.

@OnaBegonia , ... from a Gaelic speaking family (Scotland) and it grinds my gears when folk just use them with no thought.

Me too, especially if they mispronounce or misspell the name
