@daisypond
".......Gaelic always links to Scotland......."

So why is the main type of football played in Ireland called Gaelic football and our national games are called Gaelic games here in Ireland - Gaelic football, hurling and camogie which is similar to hockey ?
The umbrella organisation that run these games at club and national level is called the GAA, the Gaelic Athletic Association.

@Confusion101, @mathanxiety , I agree. I'm Irish, don't like Irish names but was just throwing out some suggestions. I actually know a Ceadaoin and Craoi so just threw them in there 🙃

sunglassesonthetable · 26/07/2022 09:42

These are such beautiful names.

FlippinOmicron · 26/07/2022 10:07

I've never heard of the name Marsali before @mathanxiety.
It's lovely.
I've googled and am getting conflicting information. Some sites say it is Scottish and some say it is Irish.
Has anyone heard it used in real life ?
Was it in Ireland or Scotland ?

KirstenBlest · 26/07/2022 10:43

@FlippinOmicron , it's Marsaili.

Some of the names suggested on this thread are misspelt. Saoirse is not Saorise

EdinburghGirl1 · 28/07/2022 10:18

My real name is Eilidh and I love it. Yes I always have to spell it but it doesn't bother me and I like having a more unusual name. Although here in Scotland it is more common these days. Mhairi is also a lovely name

Dé Céadaoin is the word for Wednesday. It means "first fast day", because Friday is called Dé hAoine meaning "day of fasting".
Strange name to give a child.
Craoibhín means "little branch" - it's a term of endearment. Craoi might be short for Craoibhín or maybe confused with Croí which means heart or courage. Croía is occasionally used as a name.

What do the other days of the week mean? @SeanChailleach

Marsaili Ive only ever known as a Scots Gaelic name. It's really pretty.

mathanxiety · 28/07/2022 17:14

I think it's a great name, and I believe it's a Gaelic version of Marjorie, though I may be thinking of another name entirely.

mathanxiety · 28/07/2022 17:25

Gaelic and Gaeilge refer to languages in the context of names or other language related topics.

The GAA was founded at the turn of the 20th century when the word Gaelic was also used as an adjective for all things Irish, along with Celtic. They were romantic words, harking back to the distant, fondly imagined past. You see traces of the romanticism in titles like the GAA and the Boston Celtics, but for perhaps the last hundred years Gaelic hasn't been used to refer to the Irish language. It's 'Irish' and 'Gaeilge'.

You see a lot of references to 'Gaelic' and 'Celtic' madey uppey stuff in places like Pinterest and in Irish gift shops in the US.

My favourites Scottish Gaelic names are

Eilidh
Marsali
Fiona
Catriona

DD is Sadhbh - we’re in NI, and I’ve only heard of one other.

When I found out we were having dc2 I found it really hard to find another Irish girl’s name that suited. The lovely ones (Aoife, Caoimhe, Niamh) are really popular, and the ones used less frequently (Blaithín, Gobnait…) don’t errrr…. flow off the tongue so well.

Thankfully he was a boy!

LizzieAnt · 28/07/2022 23:14

for perhaps the last hundred years Gaelic hasn't been used to refer to the Irish language. It's 'Irish' and 'Gaeilge'.

Listen to the pronunciation of Gaeilge in Ulster (and Munster) Irish though, @mathanxiety. Native speakers in Ulster say 'gaelic' for the language name in Irish.

www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/Gaeilge

The spelling Gaeilge is Connacht Irish - and now standard Irish as well.

However, even though there's a spelling standard, there's no pronunciation standard. The Connacht pronunciation is the one taught in schools, but in the Gaeltachtaí I think people probably pronounce the words as they always did. That's what we're hearing in the link above and, from personal experience, that's certainly the case in Corca Dhuibhne in Kerry too. (And, the Caighdeán notwithstanding, the older Munster spellings like Gaelainn are often used there still for the language name.)

mathanxiety · 29/07/2022 00:05

It's interesting that the Ulster speaker there doesn't make any concessions to broad and slender pronunciation. I think it's closer to Gaeilig IRL in Ulster Irish (and also north Mayo)

@mathanxiety Yes, I should have said Connemara earlier, rather than Connacht.
