Relatively anglicised welsh boys names?

I'm 33w pregnant with DC2 and need to start thinking about names. Don't know sex but have a decent girls list - it's boys I'm stuck on.

I'm Welsh, DH is English, we live in England.

I'd like a Welsh name for DC2 but I think for DH to not veto it, it needs to be quite anglicised. Other than Rhys, Gavin, Idris and Gareth (which all a no for me thanks to family/boys I was at school with!) I'm coming up blank.

More than one syllable preferred. I LOVE Rhodri but suspect it'll get a no.

If all else fails I'm having Wyn as a middle name!!

Huw is safe.

My DS was very very nearly Ioan (yo-ann)

DGF was Gwylim. He worked for years in London where it was also abbreviated to Will which he didn’t seem to object to.

Frazzled2207 · 01/07/2022 11:01

@Mykittensmittens
my ds was very nearly Ioan too. Fab name. Eventually decided that in England it would just cause issues even though my English dh was keen. Better than Iwan and Ieuan IMO.
Huw is def safe if you can live with the slightly different pronunciation. (DS) Gethin isn’t pronounced or spelled totally correctly all the time but it mostly ok.

GogLais · 01/07/2022 11:01

Huw will be said as Hugh/Hew

Gwilym is welsh for William, it is often misspelt. It is not Gwylim. It shortens to Will/Wil because it contains WIL

I love welsh names. I was born in Swansea and we named our daughter Cerys. That gets butchered here in London which surprises me tbh.

For boys I love

Owen
Hywel
Huw
Rhodri
Rhys
Gethin

I think a good test is to go to Starbucks or somewhere similar and use the name and see what happens.

I find with Cerys either people don't know how to spell it (fair enough) or they see it written and can't pronounce it. We've had lots of seris and se-rise ....

welshweasel · 01/07/2022 11:07

I have a Taliesin (Tal) and a Iolo. Now live in Wales but eldest born when we lived in England. Never had any issues with pronunciation after people hear the names once!

newtb · 01/07/2022 11:12

Ewan

My husband pronounced Osian as Ocean so that puts me off but Macsen is great and can shorten to Max
I like Aron as well

Oh I love Macsen so much but my husband hates Macs as a nickname :(

GogLais · 01/07/2022 11:43

Hywel is nice but will be Hugh-el or Howell.
Have a Iolo in the family and he sometimes gets Yo-low or Yoll-ow

Ewan is scottish

ladycarlotta · 01/07/2022 13:08

Teilo, Taliesin, Elis, Emlyn, Ianto.

Minster2012 · 01/07/2022 14:42

Bryn Wyn Larry

Minster2012 · 01/07/2022 15:03

Seriously though, love Rhys & Ellis

Mykittensmittens · 01/07/2022 15:25

@GogLais my incorrect spelling of Gwylim was a typo. To be fair, that’s because I never called him that, or Will (or randomly Phil which was another nickname) because I was always calling him Taid 😂

GogLais · 01/07/2022 16:49

Typo or not, he'll get a lifetime of it @Mykittensmittens. Ah. Taid, that's a word I've not heard for a long time

Frazzled2207 · 01/07/2022 18:32

Love Rhys but my English dh just couldn’t say it properly

Changechangychange · 02/07/2022 10:16

I think a good test is to go to Starbucks or somewhere similar and use the name and see what happens

This is a terrible test - I’ve known Starbucks fuck up Matt (Max, Mart), Anna (can’t remember but it was something totally random like Ella) and Tom (Tam, Tim, Torm, Dom, Sam).

The Starbucks name generator is a thing for a reason:

Guto and Elias are gorgeous. Dylan is the best name in the world, in my opinion, but I can’t stand the English/American pronunciation of it so depends on how relaxed you’d be about that!

Shlomping1234 · 03/07/2022 15:04

I have a Iolo. Was a nightmare for English relatives to pronounce initially.

Yiayoula · 03/07/2022 18:26

Hold out for Rhodri, OP !

Rhodri and Geraint are my two favourite boys names, but DH vetoed both 😳

Mummyme32 · 08/07/2022 19:53

I read through all these replies thinking RHYS, why has no one said Rhys! 😆 It’s in your first post. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Dylan?
Ellis?
Harri?
Aidan?
Daryn?
Steffan?
Trystan?
Vaughn?

We are expecting another boy and husband is Welsh so I’ve been looking at the names on your replies with great interest! I find boys names much harder than girls!

GogLais · 08/07/2022 22:27

Larry isn't Welsh @Minster2012

Rhys is great, but the 'Rees' pronunciation isn't good.
@Mummyme32
Dylan? - ok said as 'DULL-an', but not ok said as 'Dillun', which is what they will say
Ellis? - Elis in Welsh
Harri? - ok
Aidan? - Irish not Welsh, Aidan would be EYE-dan in Welsh
Daryn? - the Daryn spelling gives you Darrin
Steffan? - fine
Trystan? - ok
Vaughn? - Vaughan. Lloyd is nice. Both are anglicised

I have a soft spot for Glyn as a welsh name that works in England. Not with Wyn as a middle name though

I can think of lots of names but not many Welsh names work outside a welsh-speaking area. (Bleddyn, Dyfan, Dyfrig, Emyr, Llyr etc)

JanePrentiss · 08/07/2022 22:33

My nephew is called Geraint! It's a fab name! Affectionately referred to as Gert by his mum 😄
