I love this name and my dh likes it as well but worried it will just remind everyone of Miles Cyrus. Opinions? (And any similar names!)

I like Riley for a girl

FirstFallopians · 30/06/2022 18:09

Miley make anyone under 35 immediately think “Cyrus”. It’s like Kylie in the 80s.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but if you want to avoid people making a celebrity connection, I’d pick something else.

MassiveSalad22 · 30/06/2022 18:12

I mean, isn’t she the originator of the name? Miley, short for Smiley, which is a nickname - her real name is Destiny. I don’t think it existed as a name otherwise? So people will think of Cyrus yes.

However I know a real life Miley (and a real life Cyrus) and after the first meeting it just becomes their name, like with any other name. No biggie!

calmlakes · 30/06/2022 18:12

Okay I'm well over 35 and I immediately thought Cyrus for what it was worth.

MassiveSalad22 · 30/06/2022 18:13

As for similar names I like Riley for a girl too, and love the name Hadley.

Lalosalamanca · 30/06/2022 18:13

Same as above

Even if it didn't make me think of her it's a nah from me

PeekAtYou · 30/06/2022 18:20

I think of Cyrus and am over 35.

I don't think it's a bad association. People call babies Katie despite Price and Hopkins bring the most famous Katies (in the UK at least)

HerTableLaid · 30/06/2022 18:20

Miley for Irish people will always be a gormless middle-aged mushroom farmer who says ‘Well, Holy God!’ (from a long-running soap).

Miley??
Staynow · 30/06/2022 18:28

I've never heard of anyone being called Miley apart from Miley Cyrus so that would be my first thought too (at 47). She's not someone I'd want to name my child after either tbf.

LaTangerina · 30/06/2022 18:36

Miley is a traveller name here, I know multiple kids & adults here called Miley.

JaniceBingALing · 30/06/2022 19:05

No

miltonj · 30/06/2022 19:07

Yep, I like Miley a lot. Also Myla.

yui · 30/06/2022 19:51

I don't like it, but I have a low opinion of Miley Cyrus (the whole twerking/Blurred Lines thing was enough to put me off her music for life), and she's pretty much the only Miley around who is known to the public. I think the association would be hard to escape.

It's like Ariana. Name your daughter Ariana and I wouldn't be surprised if people thought you were inspired by Ariana Grande, even if you liked the name before she was famous.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 30/06/2022 19:57

@HerTableLaid Grin

there will only ever be one Miley for me and it's ain't Ms Cyrus!

'Member the time he went for a roll in the barn with some strumpet who wasn't his good wife Biddy and the nation was in uproar! Grin

I was scrolling down the thread rapidly to see if any other Irish person had suggested this.

The only Miley I could ever imagine! 'Well, Holy God!' 😂

EarringsandLipstick · 30/06/2022 20:01

Member the time he went for a roll in the barn with some strumpet who wasn't his good wife Biddy and the nation was in uproar!

Said strumpet is a mum in my kids' school (the actor clearly!) & she's lovely. First day I saw her, I gasped ... 'it's Fidelma!'

She says she still gets recognised & hissed at when she's out & about.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/06/2022 20:15

Yes it will. No don’t use it.

How about Marnie?

DontLikeCoffee · 30/06/2022 20:58

No, it’s awful. It not even Miley Cyrus’s real name. It’s just nicknamey and will date.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 30/06/2022 21:03

@EarringsandLipstick, that's so funny, all these years later! Foxy Fidelma taking advantage of poor sweet Miley in the hay barn. Not something that can be easily forgiven!

I’m surprised the poor woman didn’t have to leave the country! Grin

Miley Byrne is who I'd think of too if I heard the name Miley 😁, but it's a very Irish association.
Blast from the past!
It's a form of Miles I guess, or was in his case anyway.

SurpriseSurprise · 01/07/2022 10:10

I love the name Miley, but I’d be worried about the whole Miley Cyrus thing too

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 01/07/2022 10:27

Miles, with nn Miley would be better. Gives him options when he's a CEO.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 01/07/2022 10:32

I'd forgotten Miley Byrne was a mushroom farmer. That's definitely the least sexy category of farmer.
