Blair for a girl? I really like it but I'm worried it might be too surname-y?

OP posts:

I straight away think of Tony, of someone showing disgust (blurgh) or The Blair Witch Project

GroggyLegs · 23/06/2022 09:09

It does have a similar feel to the American surname-names, but surprisingly I do like it.

Blair White is the only famous one I know of.

GroggyLegs · 23/06/2022 09:09

Oh and Lionel Blair 😂

GroggyLegs · 23/06/2022 09:09

Oh and Lionel Blair 😂

I forgot about Lionel!

GreenWhiteViolet · 23/06/2022 09:11

Definitely surnamey and I'd think you were a fan of Tony.

MerryMarigold · 23/06/2022 09:11

I think of Gossip Girl. I think it's pretty cool

ChagSameachDoreen · 23/06/2022 09:11

I love it. I have a soft spot for names like Blair, Sloane, etc.

Schmz · 23/06/2022 09:12

Tony 😂

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 23/06/2022 09:13

I work with a Blair and think its a gorgeous name!

MissStarry · 23/06/2022 09:15

Tony, Lionel, Witch, Timmy Mallets blaaaaah game

JustRestingMyEyesForAMinute · 23/06/2022 09:15

I like it for a boy.

quietnightmare · 23/06/2022 09:16

Blair sounds like a noise like bluuuuuugh to me, the film, the prime minister and of course Blair from gossip girl

Wbeezer · 23/06/2022 09:18

It's not unusual in Scotland but as a boys/mans name.

ploopypleepy · 23/06/2022 09:20

I love it !

LostInTheColonies · 23/06/2022 09:20

Awesome name for a boy. I know several, all male.

Big no for a girl. Being used in the States for girls doesn't make it right.

emmathedilemma · 23/06/2022 09:21

Only if you name any subsequent son Atholl ;)
I agree with @Wbeezer that I'd expect it to be boy's name.

KirstenBlest · 23/06/2022 09:21

Dreadful. Just a noise, like Blare

yikesanotherbooboo · 23/06/2022 09:38

If you are in the UK It brings a lot of assumptions with it imo ie Scottish, Tony fan, male. I think your daughter would be constantly having to explain your choice which isn't really fair.

RevoltingHumanHead · 23/06/2022 10:13

Very preppy. Very Gossip Girl.

I don't hate it.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 23/06/2022 10:41

Tony.
I think it's a poor choice for a UK girl. She would forever be getting "WTF were they thinking?" looks. I can't imagine calling a little squidgy baby Blair.

MerryMarigold · 23/06/2022 11:16

OP, all I'm going to say is that I put my daughter's name up here and it got criticised (sounds like it could be a car or whatever). Now she's 13 and I really regret that I didn't call her this. It actually suits her so well (more than her actual name) and whilst I like her name, I do prefer the one I didn't call her.

So basically, if people have a genuine really good point that's one thing, but don't listen to the 'Tony Blair' type comments as once someone knows your female child with this name, no one is going to think of Tony Blair for one second, just like no one would have thought 'oh her name sounds like a car' if they saw my daughter and hear her name. (And no, it wasn't Portia!).

SirenSays · 23/06/2022 11:22

Really like it! No child is going to be making associations with old folks like Tony Blair, don't let that put you off.

KirstenBlest · 23/06/2022 09:21

Dreadful. Just a noise, like Blare

Yeah I feel this too sorry…

Frida9 · 23/06/2022 12:41

Blair is quite a common name for boys in Scotland, never heard of it for a girl though

Summerwetordry · 23/06/2022 14:27

Perhaps Blaire is more feminine?
