Blair for a girl? I really like it but I'm worried it might be too surname-y?

It's a surname. It's a name that automatically makes you think Tony

abyssofwoah · 23/06/2022 14:38

I like it for a boy but not keen for a girl, sorry

BrownHairedQuirk · 23/06/2022 14:38

I like it but as pps said it reminds me of Gossip Girl (not a bad thing!)

Chaoslatte · 23/06/2022 14:42

First thought witch, second thought badgers(?), not sure why - maybe a cartoon or something. Anyway not great and I don’t think it’s very feminine. I don’t think I’d want to be associated with such a controversial politician either.

inmyslippers · 23/06/2022 14:42

I love it

Spohn · 23/06/2022 14:45

I like it, but don’t do it if your accent can’t do R’s, then you’d pronounce it ‘bleh’ 😄

scottishnames · 23/06/2022 18:03

It's a surname. In Gaelic it means 'field'. There are several perfectly understandable reasons why parents give family surnames to their children. If that's the case for you, then OK. But without one of those, is your daughter in fact a field? Will she look like one? Do you want her to be named after one?

Am sorry if that is impolite. But the principle applies to all languages, globally. If you want to use a name from a culture that is not your own, then please, please think about how others who know the local language meaning will perceive it.

PlanetNormal · 23/06/2022 18:10

Blair is a Scottish surname, and the name of a very controversial & divisive politician who many people consider to be a war criminal.

It is not a girl’s first name.

What an entertaining post.

But how many Scottish people would you say are aware of the meaning of Blair?

TheOrigRights · 23/06/2022 18:14

Tony
Lionel
Witch

I just wouldn't!

ofwarren · 23/06/2022 09:08

I straight away think of Tony, of someone showing disgust (blurgh) or The Blair Witch Project

These are the 2 things I thought of too!

EinsteinaGogo · 23/06/2022 18:25

I really like it.

I also like Blake for a girl, too.

I really like masculine-type names for women.

Max
Charlie
Eddie
Blake
Blair

scottishnames · 23/06/2022 18:26

revolting Quite a few, I would think. Where I live all the signposts and street names are in Gaelic as well as in English. So people do know, and understand. As I said, Blair is a well-known surname, and there is a very, very long-standing Scottish tradition of calling second sons after their mother's family, as a first name. And daughters, too, if there are no sons. But otherwise, to randomly choose a name from another language - any language - without doing a bit of research first does strike me as a bit odd.

Blair White though...

mintich · 23/06/2022 18:34

Love it for two reasons!
I'm Scottish and have known a few Blairs (both sexes) amd they have all been lovely.
Also I used to watch The Facts of Life on Sky when I was younger and one of the girls was called Blair and I loved her!

Tintackedsea · 23/06/2022 18:44

I went out with a guy called Blair. I've never met a girl one. It's funny how some trad boys names end up being unisex. Can't imagine a female Iain or Bruce but I suppose it is a possibility.

SirenSays · 23/06/2022 18:49

Does that matter? Nature based names are very common. I dont think anyone has ever told a Poppy, Rose or Daisy that they aren't in fact flowers

Phyllis321 · 23/06/2022 18:50

I think of a strident noise blaring out. There are loads more actually gorgeous names

tigedee · 23/06/2022 18:55

I love it!!

MintyGreenDreams · 23/06/2022 18:58

Could be worse I've met a kid called Corbyn

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/06/2022 19:08

Definitely Tony

Or that TV shows from the noughties with the horrible rich girl, think she wears a blazer alot

ellieboolou · 23/06/2022 19:32

Awful name, first thought Tony and second though Blegh like all the tweenagers are saying

scottishnames · 23/06/2022 19:58

Siren But in many languages, a flower name is a symbol/shorthand for something "nice" or pretty. Hence the flower names.

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/06/2022 23:37

Witch Project.

It sounds like retching sound to me. But yes also surnamey. And mostly used for boys when it is a first name. So no.

pimlicoanna · 23/06/2022 23:38

I only know it as a boys name but if you love it then use it
