We’re trying to decide a name for our new baby boy. We’d almost settled on William Richard (both have family connections which we love) but now I worry the nicknames could be Willy Dick.
Am I overthinking it?
Thanks

I think kids will make that joke, yes. But that's not necessarily the end or the world, so it's up to you!

How many will know his second name?

Not many Williams are known as Willy- none in my world at all

Will , or staight William usually
Bill maybe

( MY Gt Neph is affectionatley known as Yumyum, because he insisted his name was Will-yum when he was small)

I don't think it's an issue. William is very popular, and how many of his school friends will actually know his middle name? Younger men named Richard go by Ricky/Rick rather than Dick so I'd be surprised if many teens nowadays even know that Dick used to be a nickname for Richard.

Good point, thank you

I have both of those in my family and neither are ever called Willy or Dick.

William Richard does strike me a bit as that tbh but only as my grandfather was Richard known as Dick. But like others say no one will know his middle name. And William is lush

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/06/2022 22:58

Yes

No one knows anyone else’s middle name, and kid’s wouldn’t know Dick was short for Richard

At primary school Williams often get called/teased Willy. It's literally part of the name and the most obvious nickname.

Richard often becomes Dick, especially in North America.

Are you being serious or is William Richard a wind up? Hmm
