Seeking wisdom for baby name #3

LittleFilly · 16/06/2022 05:20

Child #3 - a boy - arrives this summer. As is our custom, we are leaving it late to choose a name. It would be great to have your views on our current list. We like all of these, but nothing is really grabbing us:

Albert
Alistair / Alasdair
Christopher
Dominic
George
Isaac
Oscar
Theodore
Tobias
William

Also love (but can't use):

Caspar
James
Magnus
Maxwell
Percy

Spouse has vetoed (all of which I like):

Benedict
Gabriel
Noah
Zachary

Whichever name we choose for our little boy must work and be easy to spell / pronounce in the UK, Australia and North America.

Our elder two have relatively classic but unusual names.

I await your wisdom. Please be kind (hormones!!) yet honest. Welcome any sensible alternative suggestions.

A thousand thanks.

Theodore will undoubtedly be known as Theo, whether you like it or not. About 4 or 5 years ago, Theo was extremely popular where I live and probably across half the country. Does popularity bother you at all?
I also feel that Isaac, Oscar and George have been over-used in recent years. I prefer Tobias, William and Dominic as they’re more refreshing, timeless and can be shortened.
I like the name Sidney, and feel it’s a similar vibe to Percy, but not sure if it could be used in Australia?!
Also:
Miles (nn Milo?)
Reuben
Jesse

DotDotDotDotDot · 16/06/2022 06:49

I like Theodore and Oscar, although they are very popular where I am. Tobias would be my choice, as long as you like Toby (I do).
What a shame you can’t have Caspar and Magnus, they’re great. What about Caspian/Cassius/Cassian?

I like Tobias

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 16/06/2022 09:11

I think you should wait until you see the child! My mum had my name all planned out , took one look at me and changed it. You’ve got a list so you aren’t starting from scratch.

17caterpillars1mouse · 16/06/2022 10:12

What about Nathaniel?

From your list...

Albert - not a fan at all

Alistair / Alasdair - I really love both of these, slight preference for Alasdair - I imagine a dashingly handsome man

Christopher - it's nice enough though the Kit trend is going strong at the moment

Dominic - I like it, though there are two in my dds year at school of 50 children

George - not a fan at all.

Isaac - lovely

Oscar - ok, very popular. I think Oscar the grouch

Theodore - I really like Theo and Ted but find Theo and Teddy awful so would avoid

Tobias - love it

William - nice enough

So my suggestions would be

Nathaniel
Lucas
Barnaby
Alexander
Samson
Patrick
Peter
Gregory
Everett

JustRestingMyEyesForAMinute · 16/06/2022 10:18

I like them all. Alasdair and Tobias were on our list. We also had Cormac and Daniel.

Less keen on Albert, George and William.

Michael
Leonard
Antony
James
Charles

BlueChampagne · 16/06/2022 10:37

I like Alasdair; would have been on our list but we have two in the family already. How about Conrad, Brendan or Anthony?

babyjellyfish · 16/06/2022 11:17

I like the ones on your list.

Some more "classic but unusual" names:

Ernest
Edgar
Harold
Francis
Peter
Lucien
Stephen
Matthias
Eric
Richard
Alfred
Reginald

Someone has suggested Sidney - I wouldn't use this not just because of Sydney in Australia but because in the US I think it is used exclusively as a girl's name.

I love Alistair and would go with that.
Otherwise Issac is solid, Christopher nice if you impose Christy or Kit rather than boring Chris. Tobias is great but he might end up Toby which is a bit wet. Dominic is solid.

Rest on your list are v overused so I would strike off

Nicholas nn Nico
Kester
Jude
Jerome
Jonah
Jonathan
Guy
Patrick
Luke
Robert nn Robbie
Lachlan
Barnabas / Barnaby nn Barney
Lucian
Julian / Julius
Justin
Marcus
Miles
Angus
Hector
Cassian

(Percy is hormones 🙂)

WeasilyPleased · 16/06/2022 22:44

Alistair is in my list so that's my favourite.

ilovemyboys3 · 17/06/2022 07:43

I have 3 boys and they are called Zachary, Louis and Toby. X

Was thinking the sam. See what name suits him when he arrives. We had a name for dc2 and changed it completely when he was born.

Lucien

LittleFilly · 28/06/2022 19:26

Ooh, thanks for all the views and suggestions everyone.

Also now adding Lucian, Hector, and Sebastian to the list.
I think, on reflection, we could probably also use Percy (Percival) and Magnus.

Any thoughts?!

Realize that we should be whittling down the list at this point, rather than expanding. 5 weeks to go!!!

I've always like Lucian but the pronunciation issue but me off. I like it as Lu-see-en not Lu-chen

I'm not a fan of Hector. It sounds like a warrior name, which is great if he happens to be well built and strong, not so much if he's a skinny thing or a bit on the short and chubby side

Sebastian is lovely, though less out there than done of your other choices. Not that keen on Sen though but really like Basti

ilovemyboys3, I love your boys' names!

riverlee and allthegoodnamesarechosen, this is exactly what we did with our daughter. name narrowed down and we threw it out and chose something entirely different. suits her down to the ground!

I'm loving Alasdair / Alistair, but slightly concerned about the different ways of spelling and pronouncing (especially with being ex pats!).

Titsflyingsouth · 29/06/2022 18:14

I know lots of little Alberts, Oscars, George and Theodores. All over-used IMO.

I really like Alastair and Dominic. Both classic but not done to death.

midsomermurderess · 29/06/2022 18:53

Alastair is my favourite. I’m in Scotland so it’s ‘Alister’.
